mitch_de
Hi, i tried CoolBook, ist shareware but running as non regisered good as normal speedstep addon. http://www.coolbook.se/CoolBook.html Only for changing (clock down/clock up, chaning VCORE) you can buy it. (May that didnt work with non Macbook/MacbookPro/iMac !!!) I would be careful with that (if you buy it) may damage your bord/cpu if VCORE changes went wrong! But, as an steedstep CPU cool down and temp show ONLY its great without registering. Before, like you and others i tried some steedstep things found here, but never worked real. Go in the CB App package (FInder open package), go into coolbook2.kext (FInder open package) and change one of the Madell IDs found in its plist. They are all for iMac and iBook, Macbook. So its not usable (shows no temp, speedstep didnt work)) until you change one of them to your ModelID. Save changed info.plist. set owner / rights back root:wheel that kext can be used/loaded later! Terminal: sudo chown -R root:wheel ***DRAG & DROP coolbook2.kext here **** sudo askes for admin passw. Then give it a try. Start CB. ( if you started before you changed Modell ID, you must delete coolbook2.kext first from the system/Extension, and you wil be askes at 2. CB Start for install that(your modded) again. You will see immediatly if it worked if CB Window shows CPU TEMP and Clock (you can set in the Apps Preferences that CB shows CPU TEMP in Menü if it runs) You can test cooling if you give CPU Load with the slider. CPU Temp rises much (speedstep gives CPU max. GHZ). Then set CPU Load back to 0 (normal!). CPU Temp cool down quick, also GHZ will be mostly down, if nothing else uses CPU. CoolBooks speedstep works WITHOUT CB running all the time. (coolbook2.kext works as speedstep in background, even if you reboot after first install/run). You need running CB app only of you cange some CB Preferences like Menü Temp. Your ModelID is show in the About this Mac window. My is MacPro3,1 - it depens whisch AppleSMBIOS.kext you use. Will only work on C2D , CD or E2XXX CPus (no Pentium D, no AMD i think, its different ) . Sure, you should have an method to boot from an other HD , if CB fails (Kernel Panic). It isstalls andf loads the cb.kext at first run of the app - so it works immediatly (no reboot) or not. Chrysaor
Are you sure it is working, is it changing steppings? I have registered version and it just sits at the 12x stepping, voltage changes doesn't take effect. Wiwi
OK, i've tried a lot of time, but i can't get an ACPIPlatform after version 1.0.3, and it seems to be necessary to have it, in stock version... (I've the stock SMBIOS kext with SMbIOsenabler under 10.5.4, but with 9.2 speedstep kernel with old method...) Does anyone have a solution, if i use an newer version boot hang with "using 4XXX buffers..." (IOACPI block the system...) Can you post your different version of ACPIPlatform, AppleAPIC and SMBIos kexts please... And if some know which kext and which versions are necessary for Coolbook... For ACPIPlatform it seems to be the 1.1.0 one (stock version) and vanilla SMBIOS... I known that i'm not the only one, so if we can get it work for all of us... I'm very interesting by CoolBook cause it enabled speedstep with Vanilla or modbin newer Kernel... and those kernel give me shutdown with HDA kext... So pleeeeeaaase.... Post your results here ! Wiwi
Ok, see here, and here if you understand french... I will test it with another version of ACPI thermal... Wiwi
Haaaaa... don't know if it's the solution, ACPI thermal can't resolve its dependencies... I think i have to tweak sometimes versions in info.plist to make the newer version work with my ACPIPltaform kext... Try it soon. Wiwi
Doesn't work, even if i tweak ACPIthermal kext and resolve its dependencies to make it work with 1.0.3 ACPIPlatform.... So ACPIthermal is not the only ACPIPLatform's element necessary to trotthle with Coolbook... jayman30
Does anyone know if it is possible to use Coolbook with AppleSMIBIOSEFI.kext? AppleSMIBIOSEFI and the vanilla AppleSMIBIOS correctly identifies my hardware in the System Profiler, but breaks Coolbook **EDIT AppleSMIBIOSEFI 28 now works with Coolbook!** Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/108148-using-coolbook-as-speedstep-for-cool-down-cpu/#findComment-812349 Share on other sites
Memorial
Works for me. I am using Superhai's SMBIOUSResolver, its awesome. CoolBook tells me that its working, I can start MATLAB and it will show that is is throttling. My problem is sysctl still reports the min cpu frequency at 1.5 GHz (which is the set frequency for the laptop). I am a little irked that the license only has 1 reset (i.e. I can only reinstall once).
