I was pricing parts for a friend's family to build the cheapest decent PC I could and decided to run the parts through the HCL and it seemed to be pretty compatible with minimal kext patching, so I thought I would share the list. I haven't ordered anything yet, so if you have a suggestion, let me know. It has to be less than $300 with shipping because that's all I was given.

GIGABYTE GA-945GCM-S2C Intel 945GC Core 2 Quad Motherboard (10007792) - $48.00

INTEL Pentium Dual-Core 1.8GHz FSB800MHz 1M LGA775 Processor (10005514) - $68.90

Kingston KVR667D2N5/1G 1GB DDR2-667 Memory (85023-2) - $25.90

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3160815AS 160GB SATA Hard Drive (117007) - $44.99

EDIT: Thanks for moving me to the right section, I somehow missed this one and thought "Hardware" was the closest thing.

Built a very similar box for my housemates gf the other week. Used the gigabyte ga-945gcm-s2l instead. Im building another for a friends dad today!

Housemates GF's box - (Current prices in AU$ from msy)

GB GA-945gcm-s2l - $57

E2180 - $79

Generic ram 1gb - $24

ASUS 7200gs - $28

SHAW xtreme 750w case - $39

Pioneer 215BK burner - $34

Maxtor 160gb Sata HD - $48

Total = $309

Should work pretty well, and your right about the minimal kext patching. Used leo4allv1 and had it working out of the box. Had to download the driver for the network off another box, but no big issue. Didnt test the IDE channel, but the sata was working. Id assume it works :)

I built mine for $314 AU a week or so ago, but picked up from the store, the prices change quickly. If thats in US$ im totally impressed with the strength of the AU$, go the economy!

Yeah, all my prices are in USD and yours is ~$294USD and the biggest diff is I used onboard video and you bought a 7200gs. Not a bad PC for the price. And I have heard the E2180 has massive o/c ability to compare to the Core 2 Extreme Processors when using a decent Zalman cooler. I am hoping ot order this beast next week or so, and I will have some time to play with it so I will install Leo4All or Kalyway on it and see how easy/hard it is.

Onboard graphics? [oops, just saw your last post] If so, do you know how well it works? (I couldn't find any mention on the 10.5.2 HCL).

That looks like an excellent deal for a basic Hackintosh!

the 945gcm-s2c and s2l both work pretty well, network needs a realtek driver, but other wise its working really well (Azallia audio, output only). Its got gma 950 graphics builtin, so works as well as it could considering. I got the two i built for other people running with EFI and vanilla kernels, i remember reading that under efi the gma950 needs a natit type driver, but i dont know and dont quote me on it.

Also i tested out the ide yesterday, ide + sata work fine on the 945gcm-s2l

@nickhamm Yeah id read the whole line o/c's well. I was going to play around and see what i could get out of it, but it wasnt my machine and thought a probably shouldnt!

FWIW, I bought an eMachines T3646 a few weeks ago (long story short: a vital but low-end computer died and needed an immediate replacement). It was $300 at Best Buy. It's got specs similar to what you note, but it's got a WinFast motherboard (no obvious model number), an AMD Sempron 2.2GHz CPU, and integrated nVidia MCP61S (nForce 405 / GeForce 6100) video. I eventually got around to trying OSx86 on it, and it works fairly well, although I had to patch various drivers, I still haven't gotten QE/CI video working, and I had to swap in a USB keyboard and mouse I had on hand. Still, it's usable, even including the built-in Ethernet. So for $430 (including MacOS license, to add honor to the proceedings) you can have a pretty decent system, be it home-built or store-bought.

I've since focused my Hackintosh attentions on a new laptop I've been planning to buy for months -- a Toshiba A205-S5859. This works even better, with functional QE/CI. Only the WiFi and built-in webcam don't work. This model was on sale for $600 at Circuit City. That's not the cheapest laptop out there, but it was a good bargain, given its specs (1.83GHz Intel Pentium Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 250GB hard disk, 1280x800 display).

  • 2 weeks later...

The parts listed have been ordered and will be here friday. The customer is a friend and they gave me permission to play with it, so I'll give Leopard a shot and see what I come up with.

Which of the bebuilt DVDs for Leo should I get? iaktos? Kalyway? Leo4All? Keep the hardware in mind.
