yay! im happy as this is the first post i can help someone with instead of asking for help! :)

you CAN create AF partitions with windows (well... DOS)

here is how.

go start>run then type in diskpart and press enter. you should now see a dos windows with diskpart.

type: list disk

this should show you how many harddrives you have installed, ie disk 0, disk 1 etc

type: select disk 0 (or whatever disk you want to select)

this selects the disk so that when you type in a command it is applied to that disk. you should see a message saying disk 0 selected or something along those lines.

type: list partition

this should show you the partitons on the disk you have selected. I do not know how to resize a partition from here, but i think it is possible, i also do not know if it will destroy the data on that partiton if you resize.

you need to have some free space available so you either need to delete a partiton:

type: select partiton 0 (or whatever partiton you want to delete)

you should now see a message saying partiton 0 selected

type: delete partition

you should see a confirmation message.

the other way of getting some free space would be to use partiton magic (or other tools) to change the size of one of your partitons.

Once you have your free space, you need to create your AF partition (min of 6gb is a rule of thumb)

type: create partition primary id=af

this will create a partition using all of the free space available. if you want a specific size partition

type: create partition primary size=6660 id=af

the size above is 6.5gb so you can change that to whatever you desire (its in MB if you haddnt already guessed)

you can now exit out of partiton magic and restart into your OS X installer.

go utilities>disk utility

you should see your disk with a partiton there wil some stupid name that is in light grey. click on it on go to erase, you can now give your partiton a name and when you click erase it will format into HSF+ journalised. you can now close the disk utility and carry on with you installation.

------------------------------------------

now i have told you all of that (i hope it is all right and not too long winded) i am going to tell you that i do not think that the partiton is your problem. Even if you did not have the correct partiton on your hard drive, OS X should still see the disk. If your disk does not appear it is because OS X does not support it. I had the same problem and i had to install 10.4.3 onto a external USB drive. Once I had OS X installed i managed to find a patch that enabled me to see my SATA drive.

ALL IS NOT LOST!

when i went to install OS X 10.4.4 from the 3.3gb ISO disk, the installer found my SATA drive, this is because 10.4.4 supports ICH7 and 10.4.3 only supports ICH6 and below. My advice to you is try and find 10.4.4 and then follow my instructions above. Unfortunatly we are not allowed to post any direct link to torrects so you are going to have to go on an ISO hunt :) or have a look at where the other pirates hand out ;)

i hope that all of that help, let me know how you get along and i will try and help you with any other problems.

good luck!

what motherboard chipset do you have? ie nForce 4? Intel 865? etc...

It is very possible that your chipset simply does not support SATA in OS X (especially if you have nForce) :D

sounds like it could be your copy, but i dont know (just me guessing.) what installation are you using? some more info on your computer would also be helpful, ie chipset etc. there is a program called everest that can tell you all of this and the home edtion is free. unfortunatly i have just found out that they have discontinued the freeware version so you are going to have to search some torrent sites or go here: http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utiliti...n_Download.html

this website is working for the minute and it is totally legal to use. Just dont expect any support!

tell me how you get on.

  • 2 weeks later...

then your problem is your hard drive. its not that there is anything wrong with it, just that it is unsupported. It is probably (at a guess) a SATA drive. if u dont know then look it up, use Everest Home edition if u can get your hands on it, it used to be free, but they have stopped distributing it, so it is hard to find, but totally legal if u do find it. my other guess is that you are using 10.4.1 or 10.4.3, these only support up to ICH6 and my SATA drive used ICH7, using 10.4.4 or higher will fix this (unless it it Nforce) Once again, EVEREST can give you all of this info.

give me some more details when you can and i will continue to help, if u get everest, it does do a good HTML printout.

cheers for the pictures, but i promice that a html report is much easier and it has links. I did some searching on the net, and i think that your board is runnig nforce4 so that means that it will not be supported no matter what OS X you have. My suggestion is to try 10.4.4 as i could easily be wrong, but i do not think it will work.

the only work around you have is to buy another hard drive. I did it when i started on 10.4.1, and it can be a very cheap investment. I brought a cheap hard drive off of ebay and an external hard drive case which connects via USB2.

let me know how you get on and try and find out in EVEREST if it is a Nforce chipset. look under the summary, that it usually the easiest.

Ah, an HTML report is easier...

Motherboard:

CPU Type: DualCore AMD Athlon 64 X2, 2000 MHz (10 x 200) 3800+

Motherboard Name: MSI RS482M2/RX482M2 (MS-7093) (3 PCI, 1 PCI-E x16, 4 DDR DIMM, Audio, Video, LAN, IEEE-1394)

Motherboard Chipset: ATI Radeon Xpress 200, AMD Hammer

System Memory: 1024 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM)

BIOS Type: Award (08/17/05)

Communication Port: ECP Printer Port (LPT1)

It says I'm not using an nForce chipset, but an ATI Xpress 200 chipset.

p.p.s sorry i couldnt be of more help
