Hey, Ive shredded through the forums and am selling my pc to my friend, time for a new build. I built a osx86 pc a while ago with a badaxe2 but that's long gone. So here's my new build, just making sure ive run it past some people to make sure im cool with no problems. I was going for a smaller HTPC kinda deal, im hoping temps dont get too bad with the G80 though.

It's amazing how many people skimp on the power supply. It's one of the most important components in your system. If you're on a budget try this:

Clicky

That supply right there is superior to pretty much all big name wiz bang powder coated spinning LED 600-700w garbage that cost twice as much. You ever been in the hospital and seen someone hooked up to life support equipment? Sparkle makes mosts of the power supplies in that critical medical equipment. ;)

Also another good budget power supply is: CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX 550W ATX12V

After rebate $73.90

Has 6 Sata connectors, the above Sparkle only 2 sata connectors.

VaporATX,

How the heck did you overclock the Q6600 to 4GHz? What's your secret? ;) Amazing!

Heh, I didn't even notice. The first thing I do when I get a new power supply is rewire it. I remove all the leads I don't need (all the molex for one) and cut or lengthen all the others to proper length for a clean route in my case. I don't even pay attention to the what connectors they have, I look at the specs. Just a geek I guess. :(

As far as the overclock. Chip from a good lot. Good mobo. Good memory. Liquid cooling, and lots of blood, sweat, and bios tweaking. Doing it on that P5K-E was difficult. Doing it on a good DFI board... pretty easy (with this chip at least). Buddy of mine has one doing 4.25 on phase. Not all Q6600 G0 are created equal, but most will do at least 3.6 on air. You want a real beast? Get a Q9650. Those will do 4 on air easy. I'm too cheap to spend that kinda money, though. :P

That's what I've been reading, that the latest batches of Q6600 chips are harder to overclock. I'll probably go with the Q6700 for that reason...not that I'm going to do major overclocking.

I'm still in the planning/research stage for building my computer. I'm a first time builder, but longtime Mac user. My motherboard choice as of right now is the Gigabyte GA-EX38-DS4...not for extreme overclocking but a nice balance. Just wish it had eSata on rear.

> Get a Q9650. Yow...over $1000.00 :P Let me check my pockets! :D

Johnny V,

Nice board choice. :D One thing though, it DOES come with an adapter so you can run two of the internal SATA ports to the exterior, there's even a power jumper on it so you can hook up an internal SATA drive without even opening your computer. It's not true eSATA ports, but hey, unless you're using all the internal ports for internal hard drives, it's basically the same thing.

Thanks! I think you're the one that recomended it to me a few days ago! Small world! :offtopic:

I forgot that it has the extra sata adapter. That's ok but then it uses the internal board Sata...nothing is free!

Thanks for the input guys, I might go with a different supply. Im on a budget of 800 though so idk, ive had great luck with logisys power supplys though. That's kinda why i went with that. I was going for a power supply from 20-40$, which probably isnt a good budget for one though.

OK...I finished my first build a few days ago and I do see where cutting all the wires to the proper lengths would greatly help with cable managing. Wish I knew more about cutting and attaching sata power connectors and such...
