It is an installable LiveCD.

Impressive from some points of view. It recognized and configured most of my hardware. It installed a Nvidia driver at boot.

What didn't work: sound (no driver)

PPPoE: there is a network configuration tool, but it didn't work for some reason (maybe after installing the OS).

For those of us who know Linux, OS X and possibly FreeBSD, OpenSolaris is an entirely different OS.

It feels very stable and it uses very few resources, thus it could be ideal for a server.

my impression is that Sun is a little late in making this move.

I tend to agree. Others do as well:

From a server point of view, does Solaris really offer anything not available in Linux?

I don't know Solaris well enough to give a satisfactory answer. As I said, it feels very stable and it uses very few resources, it uses ZFS as the default filesystem...

I believe I'd need to install it. It can be done, but not tonight (1.30 am :D )

If you need to install it to get it, don't worry about it. I will install it then and play with it myself later.

Thanks Anyways :D

My impression is that Solaris might be more stable and secure than Linux, but I am sure plenty of better informed people would disagree.

I also suspect that Java on Solaris might have some speed advantages over Java on Linux.

  • 2 weeks later...

Couldn't get Solaris 10 nor OpenSolaris LiveCD to install or run on my machine. Just hangs on boot, when trying to probe devices...will look into this when I get time later..however, immediate impression is that Sun hasn't taken the time to get their OS to recognise and run on different hardware platforms...considering I have Windows, MAC OS X, FreeBSD, Slackware Linux, all running on my machine without a hitch, and Knoppix, SLAX, Ubuntu live CDs all work fine recognising my hardware, it's kind of weird that Solaris hangs...Sun is waaay behind the crowd...
