Since you can put grub on the linux partition with it, instead of on the MBR (or you can even put it on both partition and mbr), and grub will easily boot windows, does this bring them a step closer to getting Windows to boot on a mac? I don't see why anyone would want to but apparently there are some that do.

You are right.

1) Install Windows on a hard disk on another computer but don't activate it.

2) Move this disk to your Mactel with Linux installed.

3) Boot Linux and use Grub to boot the Windows partition on the disk you just attached.

4) Win the $10000 prize.

Now who is going to do it?

:dev: I don't have an imac to try it on.

And you're going to magically get UGA drivers for Windows where....?

That was the hurdle that stopped the people over at Nakfull Propoganda, so until we get support for that, I wouldn't expect Windows. Linux on the other hand can easily be adapted to that, as we've seen already.

So I doubt it really brings us any closer to windows... :dev:

exactly... but i guess that atlest the general vga driver(the dummy driver loaded in safemode) can be debugged to see what's wrong

anyway i think that atm the only task that can be easily done is a fresh installation from cdrom

cos the first step of install is in text mode

i guess that the efi file mod is usable even to boot the cdrom

just a thought i need to dig in

edit: :offtopic: we're too ;)

Doesn't help.

Installing it is not an issue, running it is. It makes BIOS calls for all hardware access, it needs a PC BIOS.

No.

GRUB just chain loads the windows boot loader, which also needs a BIOS. And so does windows at times when it runs.

does this bring them a step closer to getting Windows to boot on a mac?

It's a small step closer, but it still doesn't get around the "WINDOWS NEEDS BIOS" problem.

I expect something taking advantage of a free BIOS (stolen from BOCHS for example) and VT technology may be the final solution. But that is off-topic for this thread.
