New001
Since I haven't recieved my GeForce 5xxx PCI yet, has anyone tried the Halo mac demo with OS 10.4.3 x86 build 8F1111A? I'm hoping I will at least be able to run with pixel shaders version 1.4. . .

bjr1028
Under Rosseta emulation? No way. If you want it to be fast, wait for the UB patch. Edited December 16, 2005 by bjr1028

But no. . . wait, isn't most of the graphics work of Halo done on the GPU if you use shaders???
DrJägermeister
I hope it is fast on my Celeron and GeForce 5xxx. . . GeForce 5 in OSX86 = no OpenGL = no HALO
New001
But doesn't the 8F1111 build have improved OpenGL support for applications??? I didn't know some video cards didn't have OpenGL .
DrJägermeister
But doesn't the 8F1111 build have improved OpenGL support for applications??? I didn't know some video cards didn't have OpenGL . This build has support for some ATI cards (not all), also not everything is working for this cards (widescreen). The only fully supported VGA is the intel 900GMA. Every other VGA card works in VESA (no openGL). Take some ATI cards from your friends, test them in your PC with OSX86 and buy the modell witch is working (when your nvidia arrives, send it back) and maybe you can play HALO. Ok, I ordered a Intel 915GUX motherboard instead, this one has a GMA 900 and a 16 lane PCI-e slot, which is nice.
Victor Gil
I tried the full version but after the main screen it suddenly quits without any message...
New001
I tried the full version but after the main screen it suddenly quits without any message... It may be just hit and miss, since the dev. kits can run it with 8F1111.
FluffyWithTeeth
That's because the Dev Kits have Intel GMA915 graphics, with full support.

Then it should be fine with a 2.53GHz Celeron D??? Or should I get a 2.8GHz Pentium 4??? I'm sure it will be fine with a nVidia GeForce 6600 PCI-e. . . New001
Well, I got a new system (see signature), I'm sure it should run fine, if I could only get 8F1111 on it.
New001
It works (!!!), but it's slow, mainly due to the GMA 900, which is not all that great of a gaming card, since most of Halo's inner code is graphically based and done on the GPU. Templeton Peck
It runs acceptably well for me and I have a similar rig as you. I don't think the GMA900 is the limiting factor though, I think it's Rosetta. It crashes a lot and there are some minor texture glitches, but at least the part of the game I played ran acceptably well. It looks like it's running in the low-mid 20FPS range. Is there a command I can use to display an FPS counter? I'm on 8F1111g btw.
Templeton Peck
Nevermind. I played more of the game and it doesn't seem as playable as I first thought.
New001
Nevermind. I played more of the game and it doesn't seem as playable as I first thought. Hmm, I tried all four options and it seems that "No shaders" is the best option, because the CPU is doing more work, and not the GMA900 (integrated, shared memory. . .) Edit: since the Demo doesn't have the console for the FPS command, you can always use Quartz Debug's frame meter. . . Edit: since the Demo doesn't have the console for the FPS command, you can always use Quartz Debug's frame meter. . . Damn. The GMA 900 really does suck that much. I turned the graphics down to the lowest possible settings, and played until the game crashed (~5 minutes). I have the full version so I was able to use the rasterizer_FPS 1 command which displayed framerate info, and it was in the mid 20s (I think it's capped at 30, by default). It seldom dropped below 20, and when it did, it was only for half a second. So I'm going to have to change my position again. I haven't played enough of the game to "officially" declare anything, but from what I've seen, it certainly appears to be playable. Good news considering Halo requires an 800MHz G4 min, meaning it's able to handle this game at least as well as a "desk lamp" iMac. BTW: PC Halo is playable @1024x768 in High Quality according to X-bit Labs (on the GMA 900). But that's somewhat misleading. This is a DX9 game, and Mac's usually do some DX->OpenGL emulation since there is no DX for Mac. Also, Apple's OpenGL implementation is less than stellar. Combine that with crappy drivers, and the difference is accounted for.

cyrana
GMA950 is 100% supported, too. And, they do suck, but not -really- bad. I can run HL2 on my GMA950 system, it is just slower than my GF 7800 (DUH) and has less eye candy. But, it does run at a tolerable speed.
jbettcher
Full version of Mac halo runs fine on my box. I recently swapped my Geforce 6600GT for a x600 Pro All in Wonder, game runs fast on my setup without any graphics glitches I can see. Warcraft 3 also runs fine, but craps out the mouse after it closes. Haven't tried WoW yet, have to get around to installing it.

Halo Demo doesn't run, it functions perfectly for about 1.5 seconds, then it quits. MAYBE, if I install the full version, it will work, I'll go do it now.
