Hello all,

Yesterday I have bought my iPhone throught a friend in the US. Now, I live outside the US and I like to know, if the activation method with the Social Security Number (999-99-99-999) is working outside the US. I ask this, because I read that the DVD Jon method causes problems with the restor process.

Let me know if you have experience in that. Cheers

Here the method:

1.) Buy the iPhone.

2.) Connect it to iTunes.

3.) Sign up using 999-99-9999 as your social security number.

4.) After failing the credit check, select a GoPhone plan.

5.) After signing up for a GoPhone plan and being assigned a number and passcode, connect to the AT&T GoPhone funding page as prompted, enter your credit card or debit card information and you're good to go. DO NOT attempt to fund your iPhone over the phone with AT&T. DO NOT set up your iPhone prepaid account in advance with AT&T.

So, after you have activated like this.. You should be able to use it as an iPod and so on.. (till the unlocking process is done and I can use my SIM card...)

You really should *NOT* activate it like this if you don't live in the US and won't be using AT&T's network.

This method described above is for using a pre-paid plan instead of having to sign a 2-year contract with AT&T.

DVD Jon's and iPhoneInterface's method right now are the ways people outside the US should be activating their phones if they want to use them for the rest of their features in the mean-time.

Will try this next month Minko.I'm off to Florida mid-august, first stop is the Apple store then back to the hotel to 'try' and activate it on pre-paid. I'll use the hotel address and try my Amex card and see what appens. I think you also need a US iTunes account ???

If you live outside the US why dont you use your old cell (if you have one) and put the sim card into the iPhone...I dont know what will happen, if anything. I thought I read somewhere that AT&T will buy Vadafone so if you have Vadafone already you may be able to get servace by a rumored 2009 or 2010 but good luck on that ss # :)

No it doesn't work. Only AT&T. But for now, I have news. First of all, you can easly activate your iPhone from outside US. Just apply for a Wirecard on www.wirecard.com. Then, create a new paypal account for US and give an US adress (simply one existing, ask google). After this, link the wirecard to paypal, and after 3 days you can see that paypal uses 1.95 $ of your wirecard account and you have the code to activate your card on paypal. Paypal will not ask the adress to confirm on the Wirecard accont.

Now, create an iTunes account for US, take paypal as payment method.

After that, you can easly activate your iPhone with the prepayd gophone plan. thats all!

hello santfekuss

i think that for now the best way is to open an itunes account (us! as I have described.. ) and NOT going throught this SSN 999 method. Why? I have read that hey have changed thier method of registraion and if you are registering like this, you will have a 2 year contract.. So, do use an other activation method like the anderson one, and wait till they will unlock this baby -> as i have seen, it will take his time but its on the way. thanks to the dev team, they are doing a really great job!!
