Solved!

Solution to Kernel Panic when trying to install 10.6.3 (or later), at nearly 90%:

This is caused by a SMC incompatibility. If your Kernel Panic shows something about AppleSMCPDRC::start unrecognized device type, it's because a kext named "IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext"

I'm not quite sure what it does, but getting your OSx86 updated is easy as deleting that kext, repairing permissions and restarting. Then run Combo Update (for example I ran 10.6.6 and now it's fully working) and that's it! :D

Hope it helps!

Best wishes

Updated post:

Hello everyone!

I'm trying to set up my PC to have OSx 10.6

I can install 10.6.0 on my PC without problems, but anytime I try to do a combo update, I get some problems:

10.6.1 -> no problems at all

10.6.2 -> lose mouse&keyboard support (mouse moves, but can't click). I made a little workaround one time that seemed to get that working again.

10.6.3 and up -> Kernel Panic installing. Just in the middle of "Copying Files" (or sort of, I have spanish OSX).

Details about this kernel panic can be found at post #9 on this thread

Here are some specs from my PC:

Sony VAIO EA35FL (Notebook)

Intel Core i3 370M

Intel HM55 Chipset

No GPU.

500GB GPT disk

3GB Ram.

BTW, with this disk (10.6) I can't get USB working and everytime I go to "About this Mac", finder crashes.

Updates:

Can't boot from any bootloader installed on disk. I always have to use ##### or some other bootCD.

##### 3.0.2 gives me that "AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement timed out" problem.

navicom's bootCD with modbin_kernel makes USB & Bluetooth to work. But at 1024x768 resolution.

CPU get's noticeably hot, and fans works fast&noisy.

Excuse my english, and thanks a lot everyone!

I had the same problems with my install when attempting to update to 10.6.7

What I did was make a note of the kernel panic. In my case it was a kext mentioned in the KP.

So, I re-installed SL from DVD, booted into safe/su mode and delete the offending kext. Then repaired permissions. Rebooted back into safemode and installed 10.6.7 combo update.

try the 10.6.6i Hazard use the Legacy Kernel when installing and the USB fix

I tryied that. Had some minor troubles installing, but I could get this done by adding "cpu=4 busratio=18" at the command line. Anyway, now it's installed, but I can't boot.

I'm stuck at the same error:

ACPI_SMC_PLATFOMPLUGIN:: START_waitingforservice(resourceMatching(appleIntelCPUPowerManagement) timed out

I found a lot of threads over the internet talking about this issue, but haven't found a concise answer :(

I don't know why, but when I get a KP, no text is printed on screen, so I don't really know what is going on :(

Thanks!

And BTW, that ISO I found wasn't a retail. Someone posted 10.6.0 as 10.6.7.

I found several postings blaming the graphics card for the hang. In your specs, you say "No GPU". What does that mean?

If you add -x to your boot flags along with your cpus=4 busratio=18, can you get booted?

By "No GPU" I meant I don't have any dedicated graphics card, it's just the internal Core i3 GPU.

It could be the problem, but I don't know why I had it working just fine (without QE/CI support, though) on 10.6.0.

I tried a lot of combinations. I'll try it again.

I even deleted AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext, AppleIntelCPUPowerManagementClient.kext and repaired permissions (using Hazard DVD Install), as it was the solution when I was using OSX via VMWare.

I noted that if I boot from ##### CD, I get some kernel panic details. I'll try to boot from it and then I'll upload a photo :)

Thanks!

EDIT: This is the KP capture when booting from #####. I just can't understand anything there :(

Sorry for double posting.

TITLE & FIRST POST UPDATED

There's something new:

I just downloaded ##### 3.0.2 and now I can't boot either the install DVD or the installed system.

I'm not quite sure why so I moved back to 3.0.1.

I think I'll stick to 10.6.2 which is the latest version I can run properly.

Besides best "compatibility", AppStore and iLife '11 support, is there something I may be missing if I don't update?

Thank you all :)

EDIT:

Just tested navicom's bootCD.

It was nice to see that USB & Bluetooth does work on my laptop! Now I know that with a few tweaks I got that working.

I booted using modbin_kernel. Got 1024x768 resolution, though. But my system seemed to be functional.

The point is that I rushed and tried to install 10.6.3 combo update, and finally got the Kernel Panic as I sadly expected, BUT I got a bit of info about this problem, here's the screenshot:

dsc01285t.th.jpg

I started testing this bootcd as I found someone on HCL 10.6.3 wiki using the same chipset as me, that made it work by using EmpireEFI disk. On the other hand, if I install ##### included Chameleon bootloader, I get instant reboot everytime I try to boot Snow Leopard :(

EDIT2: I noticed that CPU temperature went a bit high, and the fan were working a bit fast & noisy. I suspect this is related to SMC/ACPI incompatibility, right?

Excuse my english, and thanks for your patience! :D
