On my laptop with Zephyroth 10.5.2, when I go into system settings ->network, I only get "Ethernet".

On my Powermac G5 running 10.4.11, when I go into system settings ->network, I get "Built-in Ethernet"...

What is the difference? Should I be getting "Built-in Ethernet" on my OSX86 laptop, or is this just something that has changed in the upgrade from 10.4 to 10.5?

When I connect my OSX86 laptop directly to the router at work(throuh a normal lan cable), internet works fine and I get a green light in the network preferences.

But at home I am sharing the ethernet connection from a windows PC to my Powermac, and that is working fine on the powermac. But when I take the ethernet cable from the powermac to the osx86 laptop, it doesn´t react at all. It just says "Status: Cable Unplugged"...

Any suggestions? :)

There is no difference between "Ethernet" and "Built-in Ethernet", is just a name.

If you PowerMac or your hacintosh NIC does not have automatic MDI/MDI-X you need to make a crossover cable: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_crossover_cable or buy an ehernet hub or switch.

Thank you so much for your reply.

This sounds like it could be the solution to my problem.

I had already tried 2 different cables, but since both were working fine with my Powermac, I had really excluded the cable from being a possible cause for the problems with my laptop.

I had no idea that I might need to get a "crossover" cable.

So, thanks. I´ll try this out on monday. :D
