Dell XPS 420 won't boot from DVD

I have recently downloaded the iATKOS_v1.0i.iso and burnt it onto a DVD (+R, DL) using Roxio, I selected "Make Bootable". Now when I try to boot from this DVD it says "Missing operating system". Without the DVD it boots Vista fine.

---------------

System specs

Dell XPS 420

Vista Home Premium

Processor: Intel Core 2 E6850 Duo @ 3.00 Ghz

Mainboard: Dell 0TP406, chipset: Intel X38

Memory: 4x1GB Dual Channel DDR2

Video: NVIDEA GeForce 8800 GT, 512MB

Harddisk: 500GB (7200 rpm) Serial ATA, 16MB DataBurst

DVD Drive: Optiarc DVD+- RW AD-5170S

BIOS: Dell A03

---------------

Help would be appreciated.

I tried this (with iATKOS_v1.0ir2.iso) and it just boots Vista. I think it does do something with the DVD though, because it takes the PC way longer to boot.

I did set the boot preference to DVD instead of HD

EDIT:

I tried to boot from the DVD using F12, and in the Boot Device Menu, when I selected "Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive", it returned "Selected boot device not available".Does anyone know how to fix it?Thanks in advance.

I also updated my BIOS to A03, but this has the same problem.

I tried the macdotnub OSx86 v1-r5.iso, which should contain Tiger but this also gives the "Missing operating system"-error.

any help?

Is SATA mode set to IDE or AHCI RAID in the BIOS?

If I remember correctly, only Kalyway worked in AHCI mode. (Better mode, if you have more than 2GB a memory it's a must or you will getting crashing.)

Also, add -v to the boot options so you you can see the last message displayed if it doesn't work.

In Setup (F2), under "Drives", "SATA-0" shows me:

Controller: Serial ATA

BIOS: This drive is controlled by the RAID BIOS

SATA Operation:

"RAID On" is selected. "RAID Autodetect/ATA" is deselected.

I do not see any AHCI or IDE options.

Also, add -v to the boot options so you you can see the last message displayed if it doesn't work.

Where can I find the boot options? (I feel this is a stupid question, sorry for that)

- EDIT: added image of bcdedit.exe -v, I hope that is what you meant.

------------

EDIT: In the Boot Sequence (in System in the Setup) it says my "Onboard SATA Hard Drive" is not present. (Instead I have an "Intel ARRAY" which I boot Vista from) It does recognize my "Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive".

I tried Autodetect, but still no success.. Could it be that my DVD driver or disks just suck?

EDIT: I tried it on my brothers XPS420 too, same error occured. His specs are the same, except he still has BIOS A02.

Is there a possibility that the Intel Viiv software could cause this?

The Dell manual says that Intel Viiv Technology includes

1. a BIOS that supports Intel Quick Resume Technology

2. device drivers.

It's none of that. I've done it on BIOS A2 and A3 and any windows drivers installed on the Windows partition don't affect OS X at all.

You said no success, is it the same "Waiting for root error"?

Have you tried Kalyway's DVD. I found it best anyways.

Haven't tried Kalyway..

I do not see "Waiting for root error" I see "Boot device not available", so there is something wrong with my DVD drive I guess..

I'll just try to screw around with the DVD drive.
