Knowing what kind of board you have would help - someone can help you with the settings available on your board. As a first step go into BIOS at boot and take a look at what's available. You are looking for onboard controller settings.

In my case I have a Gigabyte P35-DQ6 with IDE optical drives on my JMicron but SATA drives on my ICH9R. To install OSX I have to set my JMicron to IDE and OSX will then boot off the install DVD. After the install I have to switch the JMicron to AHCI.

That's the sort of problem I'm experiencing, but in my case, the DVD is connected to the JMicron controller and it won't boot any OS X 86 DVDs (I tried every single release and all of them say that /com.apple.boot.plist is missing). It doesn't work at all using both IDE or AHCI
