Calista
Hi everyone! I feel that the current situation concerning hardware for OSX86 is a bit messy. It's sure great OS X kan run on a lot of common hardware. Unfortunately it's hard to build a rig widthout spending hours of reading and searching on the great wide web for finding a rig which will work. Add to this the issue of performance and the situation is even worse. A lot of the ease of use associated with the Mac plattform comes from the simple fact that only a few variations of the hardware exist. This could be done to the x86 platform av well. On to the question then - would it be interesting with a community driven project to create a unified OSX86 setup within the different segments HPC (dual CPU), High Performance (ATX), Value (mATX) and Portable? For each of these segments one (1!) motherboard (or laptop) would be selected and every effort should be to made not only to make it work flawlessly along with well specified and easily available hardware but also have a keen eye on performance. One such setup could look like: Motherboard M (only "M" will recieve "official support") Graphics card N1, N2 or N3 (for different budgets) Wired ethernet O Wireless P Other parts, like harddrive, memory, CPU etc. is close to transparent to the OS. The list could be updated from time to time to reflect changes in available hardware but still trying to keep it strict. Sure, we wouldn't be able to build a OS X machine from old spare parts and it would be a few bucks more expensive than buying the cheapest possible parts - but as long as you stick to the official parts list you can expect an easy to use and well supported system. Not todays mess of "it's working - almost..". Or is it just a plain stupid idea? But I know for sure I could spend a 100 buck extra to gain this extra peace of mind and save the time and hassle of investigating every piece before it makes its way into a system. Opinions anyone? alexaltair2
Good idea mate. PS I found myself in a situation when NOTHING has support except CPU on my computer and I don't want to buy NEW computer just to get things work. After comprehensive research on the site and this forum I've come with idea that the most "correct" solution for my situation is to get USB support first (even USB has no support on my MB). It's seems clear to me that while support for SATA, Graphic Cards, Sound Cards, Network Cards etc "comes and goes" with every new build of OS X, the support for such things as PCI bus and USB-via-PCI will be supported forever. So, this is how I plan to get my PC...eh, Mac to work: CPU...........................AMD X2 3800+ (cpus=1 for stuttering problem) Sound In/Out..............via USB, practicaly any USB audio device works Video.........................PCI-E X1600 Printer, Scanner..........via USB with/or without original driver iPod...........................via USB SATA HDD..................via SATA to USB internal or External Box Mouse and Keyboard...via PS/2 to USB USB itself...................via PCI USB 2.0 unknown card with 5 ports (ALI chipset) You see even such chipset don't "bother" OS X and it's not VIA or Intel.... sasander
I think this is a great idea. I'll be building up a new machine in May, and I'd like it to run osx. I've been looking for a set of the "best" hardware but have been unable to find it. Doesn't "cpus=1" make use of only one core. . . either don't get the CPU, or *try* using "idlehalt=0".
