Hi,

I think it would make sense to have a way to keep all your Files, Settings and current programs as they are,

and simply kinda "upgrade" to 10.4.4. Thanks to the OSX Migration Wizard and VMware, this is possible.

This guide does not require any additinal partitions. It is all done via VMWare. of course you don't need this

guide, if you feel comftable with setting up another partition on your harddisk for the 10.4.4 installation.

ATM, we have to use VMWare anyway. So here is what you can do:

Requirements

We need the same space, that we have USED on our actual 10.4.3 harddisk, plus 5GB extra. Just the USED

space. So if you have OSX on an fo.ex. 80GB harddisk or partition, and your files and settings take 20GB,

then you just need the 20GB + 5GB extra = 25GB of free space.

Setting up the temporarily virtual volume

1. Create a virtual disk of the USED size that your actual 10.4.3. installation has + 5GB extra. To find out,

how many GB of your harddisk is used, simply rightclick on it and select information.

2. Follow maxxuss installation tutorial and install 10.4.4. on that virtual-drive.

Prepairing VMWare for the migration process

1. In the settings of your VMWare Virtual-Machine, add your REAL OSX 10.4.3 harddisk/partition to the

VMWare Virtual-Machine. While adding it, make e sure to click on advanced and check it persistant.

2. Boot your new installed 10.4.4. from the virtual drive.

3. In Finder, go to Programs>Utilities>Migration Assistant. Select point two, "from another volume" > select

your 10.4.3 drive and migrate everything you can

Put it all back to your native disk

1. Again, follow maxxuss tutorial and install 10.4.4. via VMWare on your REAL disk/partition. at this point,

you already have your settings backuped in VMWare, so you can savely delete the old content of your

10.4.3 disk in the installaiton procedure.

2. After install of 10.4.4, add the REAL drive to VMware, too. Make sure to click on advanced and check it

persistant. then boot from the REAL 10.4.4. in VMWare.

3. In Finder, go to Programs>Utilities>Migration Assistant. Select point two, "from another volume" > select

your virtual 10.4.4 drive and migrate everything you can :)

4. switch back to 10.4.3 Vmware, and from there repair permissions on your native 10.4.4 volume. Ths is

really important! Also when you started up your 10.4.4. native, do a repair permission again.

Done :D

hope this works for you, too.

I actually used a native 10.4.3 install to install 10.4.4 on a seperate hdd. I think your tut will work (at least i hope so) for the 10.4.3 install I normally use, which i'm going to upgrade. If you do this beofe i do (i'm burned out), please let me know if it breaks older apps and newer instaled apps.

Yhanks!

please let me know if it breaks older apps and newer instaled apps.

Well I am totally flashed atm ;)

It works perfect, all apps run, except Opera (what could have another reason) and my iconset with candybar, what I had to apply again. The rest worked perfect. But it is very important to repair the permissions of the 10.4.4. volume from within 10.4.3.!! Because 10.4.4. is not able to repair the permission from withing itself. it is just too much files.

But all apps work. No more problems with Saft here, and even more: DVD-Player works now! W00t :D

tested apps: iwork, itunes, imovie, iphoto, azureus, office, even entourage and my mail accounts etc.

Tomorrow, I'll buy some Apple soft in the store, to say thank you :)

okay I just ran into some thoughts while planning. remember the dvd patch, ati patch and the maxxuss kernelctrl patches that were available for 10.4.3? wouldn't that be carried on to the 10.4.4 install? Just someting to ponder on while you plan your upgrade :)
