I just bought a new Macbook Pro and I love it! I used my Time Machine drive on my desktop to duplicate my user on my new MBP, but I have one question. Is it possible to have the External hooked into my desktop via USB but have it shared over the network so my MBP can see it as a Time Machine drive? I really don't want to have to buy a Time Capsule if I don't have to. Thanks!

Hi,

I'm not sure if this will help. I'm only a new Mac user, feeling my way with a new Hack but I did stumble across something the other day that might do it. There's a program called iTimeMachine which apparently allows time machine backups to network shares. Technically you could have the usb drive on the desktop served out as a network share and use iTimeMachine to allow Timemachine to use that share as a backup drive.

I haven't tried it myself but it's something to investigate.

Cheers,

Arkay.
