SATA Drive not hotswapable - QUICK QUESTION

I'm booting in AHCI mode with a GA-P35C-DS3R mobo

 

QUESTION: Should I be able to plug in a SATA HDD and it appear on the desktop or in Disk Utility while Mac OS X is running?

 

I've just plugged in 2 HDD's and niether have showed up - quite sure they will on reboot though
