TyMan
I just finished a Kalyway build with the latest 10.5.1 disc with a GUI partition and a Vanilla kernel, EFI v8. Everything went great. After running the system for about 40 min it froze and I got the grey box saying I needed to reboot. I complied and next time it crashed at the 20 min mark. So far these crashes have been inevitable and happen at random times, I even let the system idle for as long as I could but it died 45 min in. Here's my hardware: Intel Q6600 Asus P5K 8gig of OCZ Sli ready ram a Western Digital Caviar at 320gig SATA ATI Radeon x1900xtx I also have a couple of other NTFS drives attached as well. The only drivers I checked were the audio driver (ALC883) and Nati for ATI cards. It found my video card right away and the audio too. So far I am at a loss as to why it's happening any help would be great. If you need any more info, let me know. Perhaps I missed a BIOS setting that I may be unaware of? ~pcwiz
Does this happen in Windows or another OS too? You might have a case of a processor overheat. Download Temperature Monitor for OS X, on the first launch it asks you whether you want to install Intel x86 support, say Yes, and it will show you the temperatures for your four cores. It should be around 30-45 C (thats what I'm getting with a stock cooler). You might have a case of buggy drivers. Uninstall ANY custom drivers you installed or do a reinstall with no extra drivers (I mean like leave the EFI and Vanilla options, just no network, sound, or video drivers) and see if it does the same thing. TyMan
I will try a more barebones install like you suggested and see what happens. I had a working flat image install but that wouldn't recognize my SATA drives. I know it's not a heat issue, though I am overclocking, I have an air cooler that is more than sufficient. I even tried reverting to stock settings but it still crashed. Thanks for the help I will let you know. insomnimac
There's a random crashing issue when using more than 2gb of ram. You need to remove the ram or use a boot command to limit the ram to 2048mb. I forget the command right now but a quick search of the forum should bring up some answers. TyMan
Off the top of my head I think it's memmax=1096 (x2) I had heard of something similar but I killed only 4gig of ram and that left me with 4 but that still crashed. Before I reinstall I will boot into it and leave it on for the night with 2gig of RAM set and see if it has crashed by morning. Any reason why it's struggling past 2gig? Ideally I would like to render some stuff out of say Final Cut with 8gig as opposed to 2 but I'll take what I can get. TyMan
Ok so I did what everyone suggested and went down to 2gig using maxmem=2048 and it now runs stable. Thanks a lot for the help!
