Spol Posted March 1, 2008 Share Posted March 1, 2008 I'm thinking of buying a Mac pro 8 soon and I have some questions: 1) I only need 4 cores at this moment, so should I get a refurbished (2x Dual core) mac pro so later I have the two heatsink to upgrade both CPUs? 2) Would any xeox 771 cpu work on the mac pros? 3) The difference between the ram speed of the current and older generation of mac pros (DDR2-800 vs DDR2-667) makes any real difference in overal speed? 4) Anyway to get my silent 7900gs to work with mac pros or do I need to order the 8800gt with the system? I believe the idea is you would be limitied to the processors used in the different models of the same machine as you would be limitied by the firmware in the machine itself. 3) The difference between the ram speed of the current and older generation of mac pros (DDR2-800 vs DDR2-667) makes any real difference in overal speed? The theory is faster equals better and since the new machines run a 400mhz FSB then the DDR2-800 would be running at a 1:1 ratio with the FSB so all things being equal the newer machine should beat the older. 4) Anyway to get my silent 7900gs to work with mac pros or do I need to order the 8800gt with the system? Doubt it would work in the Mac machine you can however flash a retail PC 8800gt with the Mac Pro video rom and it will work with the new 2008 machines there is a very long thread on the already mentions site with instructions for doing it so you could save a few dollars doing this. I almost tempted to flash my 8800gt as I am certain I have the required rom size on the card just to see if I can get it working natively on my retail install hackintosh. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=434092 I would really appreciate any useful answers. Definitely will damn busy forum as well I visit a couple of times a day usually 40 pages of posts every time take a look at the Marketplace forum topics as well it may be possible to get a deal on a used machine in there. Oh and there is a huge thread on the 8800gt in the older Mac Pro's can't seem to find it at the moment but it usually pops up a couple of times a day in the new posts.
