NOTE: While writing this little guide I realized that it is NOT NOOB-PROOF. You need at least some knowledge using disk util, terminal and howto manually install kexts.

After spending 3 days (and nights ;) ) trying to install Leopard on my hackintosh using the various distributions floating around I found the way that suits me best. Here I want to share my experiences with you:

Used Hardware...

...is found in my signature.

Please don't spam my mailbox asking me how do this and that - I'm no guru at all and managed it without hazzle. All you need can be found in the forum. If you've still problems getting things to work, especially using different hardware, post a new topic in the appropriate sections here.

Distributions...

I tried several of them including: iATKOSv1.0i (+r2, +r2-E), kalyway_leo_10.5.1, brazilmac and flatimage.

None of these satisfied my wish for a fast, clean and unmodified install w/o hazzle. I was looking for a method that is as mac-like as possible.

Some detail regarding the famous two:

  • iATKOS v1.0i boots properly but failed to install.
  • iATKOS v1.0ir2 boots dvd and installs very slow and no booting after install (unfixable)
  • iATKOS v1.0ir2-E fails to boot completely
  • Kalyway boots and installs but looks like {censored} to me: the ui is modified. Fails update to 10.5.2. Doesn't change language completely, it seems like language sources have been dropped.

note: All dvds burned using hq-media like verbatim with 2x speeds.

What now?

looking around here I found the following thread by ls8: LINK

It is a way to install using a stock, nonpatched Leopard DVD and a compilation of scripts and kexts you can download in the thread. Ls8 assemled this for the GA-P35-series only BUT IT CAN BE MODIFIED VERY EASY FOR EVERY COMPATIBLE HARDWARE.

In a nutshell

The LEO_GA_P35_DS4_PACK_v5.zip by Ls8 contains the PC_EFI, some standard & GA-P35 related kexts and TWO shell-scripts.

The pre-patch.sh contains the steps needed to install PC_EFI and set the BOOT-Flag.

The post-patch.sh backs up & deletes incompatible kexts and installs new & patched ones.

The scripts contain precise comments for every step you need to take. Just open them up in the text-editor and alter the needed values and perhaps add some lines for your own kexts that you have to copy to the kext-folder inside the package.

Once redrafted you have to partition a second harddisk using GUID, run pre-patch.sh, run OSInstall.mpkg on a stock-leopard-dvd, run post-patch.sh and voilà: leopard is ready to rumble.

The difficulty

At this point you might have realized the sticking point: Because you run the OSInstall.mpkg you need either a working Leopard-install (crappy or not) or a real Intel-Mac running 10.5.

My solution: I used an old hdd and copied the flat-image-install to it. But this isn't suitable for everyone.

Perhaps anyone knows a good solution to this issue? Bootable Image on USB-Stick-perhaps? I don't know, but I know that this was the best way for me to install a really STOCK-LEOPARD that doesn't makes me sick looking at some orange background, an altered dock and crappy icons after 2 hours of installation.
