pflatline
It seems to me,especially since apple has not yet released the X86 source for Darwin, they they may well kill the open source part of their OS. It would make alot of sense. I would guess that they now see Darwin as a threat to their OS. From the first time I heard that they were going to release OSX on the X86,I allways thought the key to making it run would be Darwin. It turned out this was exactly the case. Not quite as I had envisioned. I actually imagined that someone would rip out all the parts of OSX that didnt come with darwin, crack off the copy protection and make an installed,so that OSX would be distributed as a addon package to the open source OS. Still, Darwin is a serious threat to locking their OS to the apple hardware. It makes sense that they would rexamine the open source project. They got alot of good will from the community over it,but good will is very hard to quantify, whereas lost sales due to people pirating OSX is alot easier. (at least the way companies count "potential sales". I hate to say this, and I in no way mean this as a slam against anyone, but I think we may have killed Darwin. (Im not saying,"OMG,what have we done",it was inevitable that OSX would be cracked,it was Apples oversight.) R. Bear Helms
Open source is sort of like a can of worms. Once it's open, it's really hard to get all the worms back inside. The parts of Mac that Apple wants to keep proprietary I believe they will. Darwin doesn't give a user the Aqua UI or the suite of OS X applications and support for Mac OS X coded apps, does it? I think you may be missing the point.. Previous to the pirating of the dev. kit x86 builds of macOS , all or at least most of the source code to Darwin was made available.. as of 10.4.4, this does not appear to be happening any more. They do take a while to release the updated source code. I don't think Apple's running away from open source anytime soon, they made big headlines recently by giving away MacBook Pros to the top developers for Webkit. Apple is a hardware company, they will continue to make piracy difficult through the hardware. I'm sure they've done their cost-benefit analysis and realize that the resources required to make OSX completely secure outweighs the loss in sales through piracy. It's the same thing with ITMS. Just make it difficult enough for the majority of the people out there to pirate OSX/ITMS. Everyone else will just buy a Mac.
