hey guys, great info here. i'm using a dell 640m/e1405, and for the first time running osx86 - very interesting to say the least. i have vista installed and was able to create dual boot with kalyway 10.5.2 . during the install i selected an option for gma950, and it seems to have worked well. i do get some cursor artifacting, but very very little.. mostly happens in firefox. i'm wondering if this is the issue with gma950 that we're trying to fix? or is there other issues with the 950 as well?thanks
what you see is exactly what we are trying to fix for dell gma950 notebooks. You will mostly note this on PS or MS Word or any other memory hungry program (e.g. I use ChemDraw and together with MS Word it is most annoying in here). for some reason it got all fixed on mine after Jas plus kalyway update (my previous post).

Note, that if you read my previous post you see that I actually somehow messed up the system with Jas installation. Only after I installed Kalyway's right over it and installed modbin's kernel which comes with Kalyway combo, did it work.

I would like to know more details what 10.5.2 distro you had, what kernel ,which update and how you have done it.The method from the great deceiver did not work for me.thank you maybe Ill solve my mouse artifacts seen that is exactly same laptop :)
explain "did not work". maybe I can help. what happened?

edit 1: sorry, my bad. when I wrote screensaver I really meant sleep/wake function. You need to enable sleep/wake on mouse to active corner of screen. When you get the black screen after boot, move mouse into active corner and the main laptop monitor will wake up. without artifacts!

sorry for the late reply, i had to contact my friend to confirm that he in fact doesn't experience the artifacts anymore. Good news, not a single artifact since the update!

His system was ToH Leopard 10.5.1, updated to 10.5.2 and finally updated to 10.5.3. He is using the 10.5.3 vanilla kernel and system.kext and 10.5.3 gma kexts except for AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext, which is an older version.

I don't recall the exact version of AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer he is using at the moment, but I can check and obtain the file later tonight.

If you were previously using something such as mouselocator to reduce artifacts, make sure you stop using it after the update as it will actually cause problems now with 10.5.3 rather than fix them!

thanks for the update. good to see somebody else can confirm it. I had mousepose, didn't see a problem with it after update, maybe mousepose is different. anyway, looks like there is finally a solution for dell inspirons with gma950, at least the mouse artifacts. next hopefully is sleep and 2cpus on core duos.

cheers

I installed jas then booted without any problems at all but when I use kalyway plus modbin kernel laotop does not boot anymore at all gets stuck after it finds firewire

sorry it's not working for you. I assume you tried vanilla kernel? I do not have firewire on my notebook, I probably was just very lucky.

using netkas' guide and the apple 10.5.2 and then 10.5.3 combo updates. I try to keep everything as vanilla as possible, so only use apple official updaters.

In netkas' guide where it says restore kexts before rebooting I restored applesmbios.kext and appleacpiplatform.kext.

I reboot, wait for the system to reboot itself, and then wait for kernel panic.

Reboot into single user mode, restore IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext and AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext and then everything boots fine.

You could probably restore all the kexts at once before restarting after using the updater, but like I said i only replace the files that actually cause problems as I see them.

Edit: just wondering if you have bcm440x ethernet completely working? my friend's ethernet eventually dies after heavy transfers. ended up getting a macbook air ethernet adaptor to solve that.

thanks I will try that again seen that you had mouse artifact on 10.5.2 ill just try to update to 10.5.3 again

If you have a link to netkas instrucions cool if not ill look for them.

Off to bed now here is 2am

thanks guys.......

meant to include that, just forgot to paste.

btw if you could post your appleacpiplatform.kext that you are using while you have speedstep it would be appreciated. I wanna see if i can get speedstep working on my own (asus) laptop.

Here it is and also smbios one too with others does not workLet me know results my_kexts.zip

I dont know how to run those scripts.........Is it easy???????????

if you are referring to

while sleep 1; do rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext; done

all you do is open a terminal window and do sudo -s

and then paste that script into terminal, press enter and let it run while you run the update.

Edit: the applesmbios and acpiplatform kexts didn't give me speedstep, but it's probably just my computer's stupid bios. I think it throttles itself in hardware anyways so it's probably not a huge loss. I'll try those kexts on my friend's 640m next time i get to his computer.

Hi I f you could both give me file with you kextstat I ll appreciate it.

If I can spot different versions of kexts loaded then maybe i know which is responsible for artifacts.

Thank you.............

I tried your method could not get it to boot anymore....first I tried netkas method then yours you did not tell me to replace the line with dont steal os etc etc.then because I do not know how to replace kexts in s mode I boot from usb disk and just put kexts in extention folder but no luck both ways that is y

I have ask for kextstat so I can see what has actually changed

I have installed iATKOS v1.0ir2 and updated to 10.5.3 using the package which is in the bay pirate. I use the procedure what you indicate to solve the problem of video card GMA950.

:)

@ the great deceiver.I goi it to work but when I start up screen in black but i activated left hand corner on screen saver with sleep display and once hdd activity stop i just move the mouse and my desktop comes back. The reason y jas did not work is because it does not install gma950 new kext.

This prcedure with black scrren at start up is all the times......

@LLauqsdI would like to know which version of appleintegratedframebuffer are u using.thanks

kalyway hackintosh10.5.3 combo update on demonoid, Added on Thursday, May 29, 2008, 544.09 MB

@great deceiver

I got rid of artifacts but every time i start I have to do the mouse trick......

in your case you had to do it only when u updated>?????

sorry if that wasn't clear. I have to do this every time. But I'd rather do that than have the artifacts. only takes a couple more seconds. I would think a script could take care of that and maybe I've seen that somewhere already. I keep my eyes open.

using the above appleintelintegratedframebuffer.kext my friend does not have to do the mouse trick on boot.

Well did not work in my case.Yesterday I applied combo update from apple did exactly as your link from nektas.

On reboot black screen then put back old kext but mouse artifacts where back.

Weird seeing that we have same laptop

That is y I want to see your friend kexts when u have them.

note, sometimes it's people's software configuration that let's them not notice the artifacts. For a couple days I got fooled and thought I got it fixed on 10.5.2. However, once I installed my Office2k8 package and Adobe package it was back bad time. If one has just the essential Apple software installed it's not noticeable. Sometimes you get it when you search in the Finder/Go to server window.
