Hello all,

I am having issues booting normally in osx, i still get a kernal panic ;) I thought my problem would be with the 10.5.2 update but i used the kalyway 10.5.2 updater and it was pointed out to me that this does NOT replace the kernal .... and i'm still getting the same panics i was before updating

Here's what i'm using so far:

1. Kalyway 10.5.1

2. MikeInNs - Marvell 88E1116 kext

3. ALC_885_Codec.txt using appleHDAPatcher17

4. Kalyway 10.5.2 installed

5. LeopardGraphicsUpdate1.0

I can still boot the machine into safemode, but I still do not have any graphics kexts installed (thought i would after the 10.5.2/graphicsupdate)

seems i'm still getting kernel panics from NVDAResman.kext and Geforce.kext

If you have a moment please check out my screenie below, and if possible kindly point me in the right direction ? i thought i was doing it right but i guess i didn't edit the plist's correctly

or something else.....

I think i get a similar kernel panic, though I can boot into OSX with full gui, use it and than the curtain of panic falls, and once i restart my computer and run -v -f -s and try a fsck, it will panic and generate a similar error, though at the time had trouble finding the cause. But with your post I now know where to look.

I have found the best way to remove kext, is by booting u using the install DVD, and than running terminal.

Here's how it went

I've finally got NVinject working properly!! with NVinject v33 installer, vram shows properly, all system specs show properly

apparently I WAS modifying the kexts correctly and chmod/chown/repairpermissions, but what i was missing macgirl layed out in one nice post, thanks macgirl!

1. so from kalyway 10.5.1, I installed NJinject v33, then modified GeForce.kext and NVDAResman.kext again, chmod/chown/repairpersmissions

but instead of adding ONLY my 8800GT device ID 0x061110de (for my 8800GT G92 core), i dropped all the endings after the "&" and added my own.

example. The original NVDAResman.kext IOPCMATCH string read SOMETHING like this : 0x00f010de&0xfff0ffff 0x019010de&0xfff0ffff 0x040010de&0xfff0ffff 0x042010de&0xfff0ffff 0x06e010de&0xfff0ffff 0x060010de&0xffe0ffff

My NVDAResman.kext IOPCMATCH string NOW READS LIKE THIS: 0x061110de 0x011010de 0x017010de 0x017910de 0x018010de 0x018810de 0x018910de 0x020010de 0x025010de 0x028010de 0x030010de 0x031010de 0x031910de 0x034910de

i opted to keep the rest of the ID's and just add my own to the beginning in case it loads sequentially. I didn't touch the NVinject.kext

2. After i got it all working i decided to try the apple graphics update 1.0 again(with 10.5.2 kalyway) which last time around installed ok, this time i rebooted and it shelled my install. tried fsck -fy , -s , repair permissions etc , tried removing the NVinject.kext with rm -R and upon reboot, then i started getting all sorts of errors during verbose boot, IOPCFamily something, and login window errors and it would just keep spitting out errors and never boot.. at that point i could no longer boot the machine , safemode or otherwise so i decided to restore.

gonna try installing 10.5.2 and apple graphics update first, and then install NVinject v33 to see if that makes any difference.

well that worked :P !! pumped..

from kalyway 10.5.1 install, using vesa drivers, installed my ethernet driver, i updated to 10.5.2, updated w/ apple graphics update 1.0, installed NVinject v33, modify plists for GeForce.kext and NVDAResman.kext, chmod / chown / repair permissions , rebooted , had some screwy keyboard issues, rebooted again with -x -v -r flags, rebooted again with just the -v flag a couple times, and now rebooted normally 4 times seems good so far, knocked out my sound tho.

repairing permissions via command line before each reboot...

also, when booting normally now the spinning hash mark animation halts as if the machine locked but it doesn't. boots fine, same amount of time as normal, just the animation stops so your not sure if the machine locked up or not, then the desktop loads in without issue.

at first glance definatly seems to be with the apple graphics update, I didn't get that issue before, but before i got the black screen pause for about 5-10 seconds tops. this time its the apple hash mark animation freezing during boot.

yep yep. agreed. thinking its either the apple graphics update or that coupled with the 9.1 kernel

i just realized something else. once it boots into os. i get about 15-30 min and then the machine becomes unstabile, i lost my mouse and keyboard , i try to unplug and replug and normally that used to work but not after the apple graphics update. after that i have to hard boot my machine because no usb device is being recognized.

also in verbose i notice the longest stall at this line

admin-mac-pro configd[43]: InterfaceNamer: Timed out waiting for IOKIT + quiesce

EDIT: going to have to test a bit more with the keyboard / mouse issue. doesn't seem to be happaning now

read that on another post too, you just reminded me. forgot about it.

kalyway patched kernel will work for us. however you'll be stuck being able to ONLY use 1 core

least that's what i remember reading

we need the 9.2 nforce kernel
read that on another post too, you just reminded me. forgot about it.

Yes, for me i can only use 1 core. try it if it works for you since your using 2 cores with the regular patched 9.1 kernel you might get 2 cores with the patched 9.2 kernel.

same exact problem here , I installed vanilla Kernel, repaired permissions, restarted installed apple graphics fix , repaired permissions, restarted and one thing I notice after it applied the update I got the blue screen with the wheel turning in the bottom that stayed for every about 1 hour , after that I gave up and reset the machine.

It started fine but at the end of loading it looked like it was frozen but if u want 5-10 mins it loads fine with all graphics working perfect.

not sure about stablitiy after 15 mins like MrRoper mentioned because I didn't leave it on for that long.

if any one has a fix let us know.

btw I haven't modified any kexts at all , should I?

Edit:

So I did restore and installed venella kernal again, this time however, instead of using apple graphics update, I used NVinject v33 ...same exact problem. Hanges at the blue screen while restarting after install and when it restarts hangs at the lading screen for a while and than runs all graphics fine.

any fix for this would be helpfull. I have a 8800GT btw

whooooo hooooo!!!! solved.

hope this is clear

here's the fix for the freezing of the spinning hash marks/black screen which are both gone for me now !!! ;) woot

I installed in this order using VESA: Kalyway 10.5.1, kalyway 10.5.2, apple graphics update, NVinject

(whatever order you do it in, after apple graphics update, you will need to modify GeForce.kext again.)

you need to modify GeForce.kext once again after nvinject, only this time you need to add a key & string

you can use simple text or plisteditor which i used.

just make sure you add this new key just before this key: <key>IOPCIMatch</key>

should look like this in your GeForce.kext plist

(find the line that says IOPCIMatch and then add the two lines just before it as shown below)

<key>IOPCIClassMatch</key>

<string>0x03000000&0xff000000</string>

<key>IOPCIMatch</key>

don't forget to, from terminal

sudo -s

chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/GeForce.kext

chown -R root:wheel /Sytem/Library/Extensions/GeForce.kext

diskutil repair permissions /

rm -f /system/library/extensions.*

exit

then reboot your pc

swapped out the nforce 9.2 kernel for the speedstep 9.2 and also installed the 9.2 system.kext

machine is really snappy now

anyone have a link to a speedstep program ? they can link ?

BTW. a very special thanks to Kabyl You rule!

My freeze & blackscreen never lasted as long as i see other people posting. even with the freeze/blackscreen my full load time for osx was right around 2 min give or take.... I don't remember any blue screen. but i'm guessing the problem is the same.

at any rate,

to do this fix ? no didn't need to replace any kexts

I had this stall both before 10.5.2 w/9.1 kernel and after 10.5.2 w/9.2 kernel & apple graphics update

Note: Once fixed i did notice is that the transition from loading white screen with spinning hash marks to loading to desktop is not very graceful, tho it is quick. so my impression is that the stalls and black screen are still there, just for a very short time. either way problem solved at least for now

btw I haven't modified any kexts at all , should I?
