My guess would be the possibility to use the normal Apple updates without trouble (like 10.5.2). So you can update your system without having to have a patched up update. so what if you had to use a different kext or needed to add an id to a particular plist or had a kext that needs to be removed... that all sounds like patching to me even with the use of pc-efi all updates should be handled with care.
