Well, I've screwed the proverbial pooch.. and not even a cute one.

So here's the deal..

1. Researched on Micro-ATX boards and came up with either the Asus P5K-VM or the Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R

2. Decided on and purchased the Gigabyte one.

3. Found out that orders cancelled on Amazon by the seller simply mysteriously disappear (and I didn't even get an email about it.. could of at least bought me a drink first, or cancelled the payment on my CC :D).

4. Oops.. did some more research and found out the Gigabyte board has been discontinued by the manufacturer.

4a. Well f- that was a close one... or do I care?

5. Umm.. not sure what 5 is.. coming here maybe?

I could really use some hackintosh-pro advice here. I've already purchased my other parts, and will need something to test them in before their return policy runs out.

I tried searching.. but apparently this forum doesn't like hyphenated words.. or using quotes around a phrase. Someone needs to upgrade :P Trust me.. I hate people who don't search first before making new topics. I won't get started on that..

... to make stories short. Used to be a PC user/modder/hacker (~4 years ago for ~18 years). Switched to Mac (yep ~4 years ago). Don't want to pay full price for a new one (other benefits, etc).

Also.. I'm quite off on all the lingo. Is there something else I should be searching on rather than "micro-atx"?

Yes.. I need a micro-atx one. I figure I might as well go all the way with this one. I have an old Apple case that's going to get some love from a Dremmel :hysterical:

[EDIT] If anyone wants to just link the threads I can't find, that would be awesome. No need to duplicate stuff on this one.

[EDIT2] FFS.. I should mention the parts I already have. Might be helpful too. Q6600 (Core 2 Quad Core 2.4Ghz), 4GB DDR2 (2 x 2048GB), XFX 8600GT XXX, other stuff not important if it works or not.

[EDIT3] Yep.. I know how to use the edit button... obviously. I searched for mATX and still came up really short on what board is the easiest for my don't-feel-like-doing-too-much-hacking-to-make-it-work attitude I have goin. Found some other Asus boards, and Gigabyte ones.. but I'd really like to have one that has the ICH7 chipset, and one that can be upgraded to 8GB of ram later if I want (so 4 RAM slots). Should I just buy a discontinued Gigabyte board listed above somewhere else?

Thanks Redliner. That looks like a really nice board, however it only supports up to 4GB of RAM :P

I'm really looking to make this build so that I can upgrade later to maximize the life of the machine.

Have any other suggestions?

[EDIT] I'm debating whether or not I want to possibly cause significant head injury by purchasing a board that's not listed on the compatibility list. It's the GA-G33M-S2. Given Gigabyte's history (and most of the same chipsets from previous working boards) it looks like it might work with some minor tweaking.. which most Giga boards do anyway.

Any thoughts on that or other boards?

I decided on the GA-G33M-S2. Yes.. I'm impatient, on top of having to get this system together to make sure all the parts are okay.

Also, I thought that ICH7 would be more compatible.. but it looks like it's not a problem for ICH9 from what I've read on other boards. Hopefully that's the case.

Well.. after the Amazon ordeal...

Alas, I was sent the wrong one (GA-G33M-S2L [usb only] instead of GA-G33M-S2 [usb & fw]) >.> AFTER they put my order on hold for 'verification'. Something that I haven't had to do in a long time with an online store. (set me back another 3 days since it was on a Thursday that I ordered it).

I've now been in phone/email talk with them about getting the item sent back, and the right one sent to me. They wanted pictures of the item that was actually sent to me for 'proof'. It's now been 2 days since I gave them that information and I still have not heard back from them.

At this rate my 30-day return period will run out from all the other places that I ordered my parts from... something that I've had happen before and had horrible things go wrong because of it.

I'm ready to write them off and tell them to shove this board up their a$$ when they get it back.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for a mATX, FW, Quad Core capable, 4 DDR2 (800Mhz is fine), motherboard?

The company was ZipZoomFly.{censored}... for those wondering where to never order from.

[EDIT] Just called them.. because I was going to tell them which orifice to use when shoving the board.. oh look, they don't have the S2 in stock. What a surprise. I'm pretty pissed off at this point. At least it's not as bad as my final 3 orders from NewEgg... man what a {censored} company. If you wanna know I'll tell ya. That's another post.

Screw it. Ordered an ASUS PK5-VM.

:( :censored2: :censored2:
