OSx86 makes assumptions about DVD burners (as well as DVD playback). Not every burner (or player) under the sun has been made to work with it. Read the HCL (hardware compatibility listing) for 10.4 (or earlier OS X releases) on the Wiki you see linked in my signature below.

Wireless internet adapters are more incompatible than compatible with OSx86. Again the HCL will indicate what few wireless adapters have been seen as AirPort equivalents. NB: Most of these are PCI cards - I don't know of a USB wireless that is working worth beans atm. There may be PCMCIA (PC Card) wireless adapters that do work, but if the wireless is built into the notebook, your only recourse is to discover whether the notebook is listed, or at least what wireless chipset it sports, and see if the HCL has any information about getting the wireless working.

Hard drive access on laptop drives IS slow in OS X 86. I should know - I have a Mac Mini which uses a 2.5" internal ATA IDE hard drive as its main system volume. An external Firewire 400 hard drive is faster than that. There probably is NO means to improve hard disk performance there.

But again, the Wiki is your friend, because in there are some pointers on accelerating OS X. Encyclopaediae are bulky and confusing, admittedly. But at least this one does have a search option, and the front page actually has most of the links you're looking for - installing, hardware compatibility, tips and tricks, speedups.

Quoted from the thread:

Scousi's ati kext activates the secondary IDE controller so you can use the cd/dvd drive.

It also speeds up hard drive reads by a about a factor of 3x.

Hard drive writing is as slow as the generic driver (0.35 meg sec).

does anyone know how to find and install scousi's ati kext??? help would be appriciated again

use patchburn to enable the burner, google it, itll get it recognized in other programs. i have the pavillion zv6000 as well, its amazing once you use scousis fix

good luck

sorry, to replace it, download his appleonboardata.kext and put it in system\library\extensions, instructions are in the thread but thats the main part
