For all of you who have not considered putting Tiger onto an EeePC, shame on you ;)

Here is my guess as to what is happening. Note I have absolutely no idea how a kernel works or how to compile one. Nor do I have any ideas if kernels even control the things below...

 

I have encountered issues with the Real Time Clock and slowdowns in the animations (dock, menus, eye candy) because the kernel is not detecting the frequency of the FSB correctly.

It needs to detect it as 70MHz.

Newer kernels with HPET, can however detect this correctly, however it results in the system not booting.

 

The FSB appears to be detected correctly on newer kernels as when not in verbose mode, the Apple logo with the spinning gear, shows at the correct speed.

Running on older 10.4.8 kernels shows the speed as much slower. As an estimate 2.5 seconds in real life equals 1 second in Mac OS.

This only seems to occur when HPET is detected and enabled.

I've noticed that all the kernels for 10.4.x released from pretty much mid-2007 onward have autodetection for things such as FSB, HPET and the rest.

 

Now the EeePC is an ultraportable, which makes it a type of hybrid laptop as far as the CPU goes.

This may also be why we are having troubles with either HPET or autodetection in the newer kernels.

I had this exact same issue on my Kohjinsha SH running an Intel A110 (800/900MHz CPU).

Now that it is also occurring on this EeePC (Which has a 900MHz underclocked CPU - Runs at 633MHz on a 70MHz FSB.) it makes me a little suspecious as to why it is occurring on these ultraportables.

Apart from the timing issue, Mac OS runs LOVELY on the EeePC.

I wouldn't dare put Leopard on there as it tends to be a bit hoggish on the resources, not to mention the EeePC

doesn't have that many resources to start with.

 

Does anyone know of a kernel that might either work on this or is anyone out there who can custom compile a kernel for these ultraportables?

 

The EeePC is *so* close to perfection!

 

Any help would be greatly welcomed.
