During installation I keep getting an error writing to /Volumes/System with an IDE (PATA) disk on the JMicron controller of my asus p5k. Sometimes it works better than others (makes it farther along), not sure if that was bios settings or just luck. I don't have an empty SATA disk to try on the ICH9, is it likely the problem is due to the JMicron contrller?

I also have an intermittent problem with my SATA DVD-RW drive where its cable comes loose (no cable seems to fit it properly). I think this might be the problem but the error message doesn't really say - the message seems to imply something to do with writing to the hard disk rather than reading from the DVD drive. I never have problems with the DVD-RW under Windows.

Dude forget the Jmicron-IDE its to INSTABLE to run/use within LEOPARD!!!

E-SATA in contrast is working great on the jmicron because it uses another driver!!!

I have Kalyway working almost perfectly on my P5K on an IDE drive... no instability here, just a couple components don't work (like the on-board ethernet plug). I know there has been a lot of problems with the J-micron controller, but kalyway seems to work really well with it.

I wanted to second this. I have kalyway 10.5.1 installed on an ide drive as well and it works fairly well. Used disk utility to erase the entire drive and setup a guid partition. Then installed with the Guid option. I believe i'm using the bios version 803. Chivarly has an excellent faq somewhere.

Jmicron...

Are you able to run virtualisation/ vmware fusion?, EDIT HD VIDEO on the IDE drive? As a simple stability test rip a couple of DVD's to the IDE volume?

With kalyway almost everything works, except the IDE for being STABLE... "maybe its the old ide pata drives but there are a lot of other with jmicron troubles on IDE".

But the instability only shows up when you put alot of stress on the system... You could run for a week, with just some web browsing, dvd viewing, mailing and not noticing this behavior...

But if the gray apple screen appears with the statement "PLEASE TURN OFF YOUR MAC" in 5 or more different languages than you might know where to search:D

But keep in mind... its just the IDE PATA, not the ESATA that uses appleAHCI driver! Which works great with retail kexts...
