JawsThemeSwimming428
I am brand new to the OSX world. I have never used it before on one of my machines (nor have I ever owned a Mac). The only experience I have with the OSX os is the 20 minutes I spend in the Apple Store whenever I am near one. With that said, I am trying to figure out how to install Kalyway Leopard 10.5.1. I have two machines (a box that is currently running Mepis 7.0 (Linux), Dream Linux, and Ubuntu 7.10. I don't think I want to install Kalyway on this box but I popped in the DVD just to see what the installer was like. It took about 10 minutes to get to the white/grey screen with the Apple logo in the middle and the loading circle beneath. Then another 5 minutes to get to the first screen of the installer. At the language selection screen I tried to click next but my mouse and my keyboard did not work. I tried rebooting and got the same result. However, you should know I use a KVM switch to toggle between the two machines. So I gave up on this machine and popped it into my Vista machine. This machine is a Velocity Micro ProMagix that I just purchased about 6 to 9 months ago. I can lay out the specs if needed. I use a Velocity Micro wired keyboard (pretty standard) and a Velocity Micro wired laser mouse (fairly standard). I popped the DVD in this machine and it got to the white/grey screen much quicker (roughly 3 to 4 minutes) and it just stayed there. The loading circle below the Apple logo just kept spinning but about 3 to 4 minutes into this a little circle with a line threw it (almost like a no smoking symbol) showed up right above the Apple logo. I waited an waited and nothing ever happened. What should I try? The only difference I can think of is the Linux box uses VGA and the Velocity Micro Vista box uses DVI. Can anyone give a total newcomer some helpful advice? Thanks!!! JawsThemeSwimming428
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0GHz (e6850) Motherboard: Intel P35 Video Card: eVGA Geforce 8600GTS 256MB RAM: 2 GB Sound: Integrated Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 226BW Need anything else? I do use a KVM to toggle between machines but it has never proven to be an issue with any of the Linux distros or versions of Windows I have used. It doesn't require software to function. Any ideas? JawsThemeSwimming428
I did that and it goes through a bunch of stuff and it comes to the following:"Error: FireWire unable to determine security-mode; defaulting to full-secureStill waiting for root device"It said "Still waiting for root device" 8 times and then I gave up. I am going to let it go longer now and see if it eventually does anything. Any idea what it is?I let it run this time and it got up to 25 times saying "Still waiting for root device". What should I do? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/85375-install-kalyway-leopard-1051-issues/#findComment-605989 Share on other sites

nikonnut
Jaws, Does your DVD have a SATA interface or IDE? This is one possible issue since in my experience Leo doesn't like IDE drives very much. Another issue has to do with having AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) enabled in the BIOS. If your Mobo is like mine (GA-G33M-DS2R) you'll need to have AHCI enabled or you get the dreaded "NO-SMOKING" symbol. Let us know how you get on. JawsThemeSwimming428
My DVD drive is IDE and I set my BIOS to AHCI and it still did the exact same thing. At the end it would just stay at "Still waiting for root device". What next? nikonnut
Jaws, That's the problem then. You are going to need either a IDE to SATA adapter or a SATA DVD drive. This has been a common issue since the 965 chipset days. JawsThemeSwimming428
I'll work on that...one question though. I changed the BIOS to AHCI, will I notice anything different in my Vista install because of this? What is AHCI and what does it do?If I purchase this drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827106095 and install it in this machine, can I leave my IDE drive I currently have in there alone and just install off this? I don't mind purchasing this drive but I want to be sure that it will work with my current drive still in. Can anyone help me out? nikonnut
Jaws, I believe that Vista is the first version of Windows to support AHCI. I know for a fact that XP 32 bit version does not so implementing it might make your vista install a bit faster. As for what it does, here's a quote from Wikipedia... "The Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) is a hardware mechanism that allows software to communicate with Serial ATA (SATA) devices such as host bus adapters which are designed to offer features not offered by Parallel ATA (PATA) controllers besides higher speeds, such as hot-plugging and native command queuing. The specification details a system memory structure for computer hardware vendors in order to transfer data between system memory and the device. The current version of the specification is, as of July 2007, v1.2.[1] Many SATA controllers can enable AHCI either separately or in conjunction with RAID support. Intel recommends choosing RAID mode on their motherboards (which also enables AHCI) rather than the plain AHCI/SATA mode for maximum flexibility, due to the issues caused when the mode is switched once an operating system has already been installed.[2] AHCI is fully supported out of the box for Microsoft Windows Vista and the Linux operating system from kernel 2.6.19. Older operating systems require drivers written by the host bus adapter vendor in order to support AHCI." The DVD drive you have listed looks good but I would run a search here and make sure no one has any issues. My Pioneer has been trouble free from the word go. I don't know about the IDE/SATA combo so that would be another good question to ask. If I can offer any more help don't hesitate to ask. Cheers, Nik P.S. I retract the XP not working with AHCI as I never hunted for the drivers to get it going. Vista is in my future as soon as SP1 is out!
