SSE SSE2 SSE3 Still need help...

When reading this 'support-article' -below this post- from the Intel-Site,

one might understand that ALL Intel Pentium 4 processors support SSE2 & SSE3**...

Now my question is, is this true?

Does this mean my Compaq Evo N1050v laptop,

supports SSE3, thus an OSx86-install by default???

Hardware-specs. laptop Compaq Evo N1050v:

Processor 1800 MHz Intel Pentium IV Mobile Processor

Screen 15.1" TFT XGA

RAMemory 1Gb

Optical drive 24x DVD/CD-RW

Here's the "Intel-Support"-story / -explanation

Processors

Define SSE2 and SSE3

Symptom(s):

* Intel® Streaming SIMD Extensions

* SSE3

* SSE2

* What is SSE2?

* What is SSE3?

Solution:

Streaming SIMD Extensions 2 (SSE2) extends the MMX™ technology and SSE technology with the addition of 144 instructions that deliver performance increases across a broad range of applications. The SIMD integer instructions introduced with MMX technology have been extended from 64 to 128 bits, doubling the effective execution rate of SIMD integer type operations.

Double-precision floating point SIMD instructions allow for two floating-point operations to be simultaneously executed in the SIMD format, providing support for double-precision operations that help accelerate content creation, financial, engineering, and scientific applications.

In addition to the SSE2 instructions, the original SSE instructions have been enhanced to support a flexible and higher dynamic range of computational power by supporting arithmetic operations on multiple data types (e.g., double words and quad words). SSE2 instructions allow software developers to have maximum flexibility to implement algorithms and provide performance enhancements when running software such as MPEG-2, MP3, 3D graphics, etc.

**The launch of 90 nm process-based Pentium 4 processor introduces the Streaming SIMD Extensions 3 (SSE3), which includes 13 additional SIMD instructions over SSE2. The 13 new instructions in SSE3 are primarily designed to improve thread synchronization and specific application areas such as media and gaming.

TIA

I think that reference for the 90nm process was for the full blown Pentium 4, not the mobile version.

If your CPU is the above one, then it wont have SSE3.

Get CPU-Z from here to verify what you have got.

Let us know what it reports in there. It should show if you have SSE2 and/or SSE3.

Thanks happycar!

I'll try to find out if it is a M#Dothan-Processor.

But instead of using CPU-Z, I'll be using this command: ~$ cat /proc/cpuinfo

I'm a Linux-user, I hope this helps other Linux users too...

Although I guess Dothan uses SSE2, on which OSx86 should be able to run.

:huh:

LOL Linux, I could never handle it for some reason.

It should put along OK on SSE2. I mean the EeePC does a fairly good job

given its only a 633MHz Celeron..... It does a damn good job!

Good luck with it all!

I've read somewhere that the Asus EeePC also comes with a XandrOS Linux distro pre-installed doesn't it?

Well, Linux will eventually be the answer to M$Windows IMHO! :huh:

I've used these Linux-distro's up to now: Mepis, SuSE, Dreamlinux and Elive.

And this time I'd like to try OSx86, maybe it'll work?!?

I'm a Unix-clone slave for sure... Heheh.

Good luck with it all!

Thanks man!

I'll be sure to update the results here and on the OSx86 WIKI, so it might help others!

It sure does come with Linux installed! Tux Racer is pretty rad :D

Mind you a few hours later it was wiped and Mac OS was on there hehehee.

If you do feel like a look into a guide for the EeePC....

BOOM!

That's my step by step guide for the eeepc.

"Been there, done that!" Thanks! Interesting read indeed!

The Compaq N1050v laptop was a 'freeby' from my father-in-law,

but I haven't got the money for the EeePC,

I got 3 kids running on my wallet, hehe!

Burning the iso-image right now with the lowest possible speed...

:P

EDIT:

:P install hangs after this command:

Now what???

So this is a "No-Go" for my laptop Compaq Evo N1050v from now I'm afraid...

Anyone able to help here?

what do I need to do to get the install-process past this 'OHCI-controller'?

Do I need to alter the BIOS-settings or anything?

Some help is really appreciated!
