A Hamster
I get a root device thing, and thanks to tange1, booting from usb DVD works... after a few times, it didn't work any more. So.. now: Is it possible to dd the dvd files on to the ipod, then use the dvd to boot from an ide dvd drive, then to avoid the root device, it loads from the ipod... Anyone thinks this will work? (WOOPS, WRONG FORUM, MODS, can u move it to "OSx86 Installation"?) tomaszjc7
its interesting that you bring that up, just the other day i tried installing osx 1111a with the jas 4.2b patch on a partion of my pc without success and noticed that under the disk utility of the mac installation process i could use my 5g ipod, after partitioning it ofcoarse, as the hardrive to which osx would be installed and booted from, assuming i switched my bios to boot from usb. I didnt attempt it ofcoarse because i have a {censored}load of music and vids on my ipod which id rather be there. But, its pretty ironic, no? I mean technically i would be using apple "hardware" for OS, im sure steve J would be delighted! Azuraeus
first off, let me say this. DO NOT INSTALL AN OS TO RUN DIRECTLY FROM YOUR IPOD If you must, use it as a backup to be able to boot if you cannot otherwise, but you iPod can't handle any extended heavy use that would come from running an OS on it. You will SERIOUSLY degrade the lifespan of your iPod if you do this... maybe even down to a couple days, or even hours. next thing... the root device thing you're talking about? is it a "Waiting for root device" message? if it is, then you have to make sure whatever you're booting to is on the Primary IDE cable if it's an IDE device, or is recognized natively by OSX if it is something else, like a USB drive.
