oh in that case, you could try this: open up Terminal and type: in uname -a.

 

If you want to run a specific kernel, while your computer booting up, press F8, type in the name of your kernel. To find out what kernel you have in your system, do ls / in your Terminal.

 

Have a look at /System/Library/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist. This is the file that you can specify the boot options.

type "uname -a" in a terminal. In case of vanilla kernel the output should look like:

 

 

Darwin Mac-Pro 9.1.0 Darwin Kernel Version 9.1.0: Wed Oct 31 17:46:22 PDT 2007; root:xnu-1228.0.2~1/RELEASE_I386 i386

 

 

where the bolded part is the machine name ....
