Hello all

I just finished installing os x via a patched dvd to a partition on my new dell xps m140 notebook. The install ran fine with no problems and when it restarted and I used acronis os selector to boot it the apple logo appears and then a black screen telling me I need to restart my computer in several different languages comes up. I dont know how to get around this, is there a way to start in safe mode? with the dvd it gave me an option before booting to enter commands -x -v etc and to set up my display but booting from the hard drive does not give me instructions on how to enter commands. I have tried installing this several times in the same fashion with the same results if anyone knows what this problem is about I'd really appreciate the help.

its funny how many people post questions here and so few post responses. I have a problem! I cant get this darn thing to boot. acronis, the boot loader I'm using somehow screwed up my MBR now I gotta start over from scratch, I have to trick the installation cd into working I start it in safe mode and then I wait for the grey apple screen to come up and close the screen on my laptop until the cd drive stops spinning, thats the only way for it to load if I dont do that it will just stick with the blank blue screen after the grey one goes away and hang there. so if you're having trouble at that point try that it might work I dont know.

before my mbr got corrupted I tried several things

I tried booting specifying the platform as x86pc but that didnt work I tried specifying the graphics as 1280x800 which is the native resolution on my screen with no avail, I was about to try 1024x768x32 because I've heard a lot of people cant get 1280x800 working but thats when my mbr got messed up now I have to try again. if anyone has any new ideas I'd love to hear from ya!

Heh, one of the problems is that we get a load of near identical posts with very little information so it's hard to provide an answer... "My computer sticks with a blue screen/Please reboot" is really not very helpful because it could be just about anything.

The first, and most obvious suggestion is that there are several dozen posts in this sub-forum with each problem and various potential solutions. Although I'm not exactly an expert I've written a bunch of replies myself to try to help out. Some have worked ... some haven't.

The most common issues seem to be -

10.4.3 won't install, or installs but doesn't work.

- Common reasons - bad image, bad patching, bad DVD, poor drive compatability, kext incompatibility, particularly with ATI drivers and ATI cards in pre-patched distributions, wrong patches (SSE2/3 etc.)

Installs but various things won't work.

- Common reasons - unsupported hardware, patches not installed (things like PS/2 keyboards etc.)

Installs but runs like a dog with three legs

- Lots of reasons for this, hardware generally, inappropriate kexts and so on.

Every one of these is detailed somewhere in these pages. Sorry to be so general but I've written so many individual replies that I'm repeating myself and becoming a little fazed in the process. READ THE WIKI - and the install guides! Look at Maxxuss own page! Search and ye shall find! And good luck.

I agree with that... That why we should make some kind of large FAQ with al the common and less common problems. I searched and readed until my ass got purple to get the right answer to my question. That's why there should be a FAQ.

I thought I'd given a lot of information and if there is anything information lacking in my post I would be glad to post it, I've searched and searched and read just about every damn post on this forum, every guide on the wiki, and even hunted around some lost and forgotten irc channels for help from someone who's been there. I only posted on the forum out of desperation I realize there are a lot of vague posts from people who really ought to have searched for the information and I sympathize with you. I've posted several things I've tried and the outcome and was simply hoping for some more input. I feel all alone out here in mac land.

here is an updated progress report on my situation

I installed mac os 10.4.3 with jas's patch via vmware this time on my second partition, it boots in vmware and runs just fine however when I try to start it up I just crash at the blue screen, I've tried specifying the graphics mode and safe mode and had it in verbose mode to look for some clue as to why it wont start. I'm going to try some different patches perhaps I'll have to wait until 10.4.4 is patched and try again

BREAKTHROUGH!!

I tried this before on my last install of macos but it worked this time! I plugged in an external monitor and set the machine to use it rather than the built in screen and viola success! It boots and runs it's so very fast! Now I know that the problem was graphics related I'm going to modify the kexts and see if I cant get my screens native resolution to work

IF ANYONES NOTEBOOK FREEZES AFTER THE GREY APPLE LOGO ON A BLUE SCREEN TRY USING AN EXTERNAL DISPLAY!!!!!

I feel quite dumb I read the entire gma900 thread in the genious bar - all 19 depressing pages and there seems to be only sporadic fixes to this issue. Try setting your aperature size to 256mb make sure your screen is set to the proper resolution and read that thread if you're having troubles hopefully 10.4.4 will have some newer nicer kexts that fix this issue but since apples intel based systems are running off the 945 chipset rather than the older 915 I'm afraid there may not be much hope... *crosses fingers*
