I've been using Windows for some time now and recently installed the 10.4.3. version of OSX into a Toshiba Pen 4 laptop, I am really enjoying mac OSX, but my question is, in windows you have an uninstall programs screen, where you can select to uninstall a program, I even know how to go into the registrey to uninstall any additional files windows uninstall left behind during the uninstall, so does MacOSX have a simular way to uninstall programs, and if not, how do you unintsall a program, it can't be getting it's file in the applications folder and putting it in the waste basket - what about all the other files that remain in the system from the orginal program???

Mac works somewhat different then Windows in how programs are installed. For one thing they don't delete system files when you remove them.

They will sometimes leave traces in the system but they are harmless and won't lead to bit rot like Windows.

Most of the files left behind can be found in your home directories and can be removed by hand. Their are other places as well, just Google and do some reading and will find the common folders they use.

Thanks Technobob for the reply, one other thing I noticed when running MacOSX, first off it boots up pretty fast compared to windows XP, another thing is my 1.1USB port, when I connect an external hard drive, MacOSX accesses it alot faster then windowsXP, I doen't even think windows XP accesses a 2.0USB port external drive faster than MacOSX, anyone care to comment on this please do so, I'd be very interested in a response....

Some programs (a few) use an uninstaller because whe they were installed they put some other files like kexts or libraries, if you have doubts consult the de-install procedure, some have manual procedures to delete libraries from Application Support folder, kexts, preferences, etc.

t0pcat, when you drag it to the trash does it take all the other files that were installed by the program, or does it leave trace files behind??

Yes indeed it does delete the application.

This can be explained by using the terminal. Useing unix commands, especially "ls" you will notice the "programs" in the apps folder are actually DIRECTORYS..

You should be able to figure the rest out... :hysterical:

God I love random exceprts from a few certain books..
