JTVoar
I'm sorry if this is a redundant question or the such, but I have been at this now for nigh, 3 days unending, and thus, I am tired and annoyed and and all sorts of pissed off. I posted this on the mac forums, but seeing as they are goodie-two-shoes, I'm posting it here too, in the hopes that I can get a real answer here. Oh and sorry if this is the wrong place for this, but it is the only place it looked like it would go. OK. in a nut shell, i did something stupid and restarted my mac during the install of XP. I had choosen the proper partition, and it began the format, but when it was about 25% done, i realized that it was formating the whole drive, now instead of doing the smart thing and letting it do it, I rebooted the imac. the resulting end: Now i only have the white screen of death. I can not boot from any cd, the internal HDD, or an external. I have tried reseting every thing from the pram, to the PMU thinging. The computer seems to be responding when I have my ipod itouch hooked in, which (again, another of my mistakes) i made the mistake of having plugged in foolishly. Little did I know that leaving your ipod plugged in to charged can cause problems in its self, but that is another rant. anyway; if i use any of the mac shortcuts, nothing happens... I push and hold "C"... WSoD; I push and hold command-option-shift-del... WSoD... I now how to solve this problem... i have had things like this happen on Windows PC's... All i need to do is unplug my hard drive, install a new one and go from there... Normally I would flash my BIOS at this point, but after 3 days of dead-end research, I have found that mac doesn't use BIOS any more, and according to their support docs, in order to "flash" their version, you reset the PMU... ya, that did nothing but make the fans come on at full power... so now I have a WSoD and a very loud, very cooled down, broken imac. So, in summery, I have come here to ask: How do i take the **** thing apart? It is not like the other 24 inch imacs, there are no screws on the bottom of the case, only for the RAM... I am not going to take it to my apple store because the bad people are only open during the week and that is a horrid inconvenience on my behalf, not to mention they quoted me 300$ to fix it... HA! ya... no... not going to happen for something I could do myself... if mac didn't decided that when you by one of their products, it really isn't yours, it's more like a life time loan... and god forbid you want to change something about it. The one thing I am going to try before taking a **** hammer to the back of the thing is putting XP on an external, I'm thinking that perhaps it is trying to boot into XP, but seeing as it can't find anything... not even the XP CD, it just hangs there. anyway, sorry for the long rant, but i am ******, only because I screwed it up, and know I can fix it... if i could open the thing up. thank you for reading all the way to the end and for any future help. U.C.
I would suggest you leave the Apple Install Disk 1 in and let it try to boot. I am sure it would sooner or later boot from CD Check here and here The 24Inch AFAIK can be disassembled from the back too. Though not to sure, try searching on Google. JTVoar
YES! that second link is exactly what I needed! THANK YOU!I am going to try holding command and see if I can get it going, if not, I just finished making an external HDD boot disk of XP and i am going to try that, see if that helps. I'll let you guys know! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!I just tried the "command" boot and nothing happened, however; i decided to try other random keys and when i tried the delete button with the cool little symbol the CD keep spinning and spinning in the CD drive. It would rev-up and then down then up then down... I let it sit and when I went to shut down (it was only spinning the CD, nothing... apparently) I had to hold the button, unlike any other time. Which suggest to me that it was actually doing something.so in a healthy mac, what does the "delete" button do? If anything.oh and i already tried putting in the XP cd to see if it was looking for that, it did the same thing. U.C.
AFAIK The "C" Button will force it to boot from CD. Also have you tried booting with the "ALT/OPTION" Button held??? JTVoar
Yes! Hurray! I did it! As proof, I am typing this from the broken imac. Anyway, Thank you guy so much, no one else on the internet helped any. But that link U.C. posted with the pictures of how to dismantle my computer helped. I documented my own experience and am planing on placing a tutorial on my website out of spite and also so I can include exact instructions on how to dismantle the thing down to just the HDD. Oh and by the way, it was like I thought, the HDD had become corrupted and I need to reset the actual CMOS, but to be on the safe side I installed a new HDD. I just hope that heat sensor doesn't become a problem, if it does, oh well, I'll drill a hole in the back of my imac and place it in some dry ice. But thank you all again for your help. I think this time I am just going to create an external usb drive to boot XP. Not take the risk again. I'll let you guys know when I have put up that tutorial. Look for it in a few days. THANKS AGAIN! XXXOOOXOXOXOXO you seriously don't know how much this means to me...
