So finally I have my Leopard working great but when I do software update.

It says that there is an ''security update''

My question is can I do a software update or will it destroy leopard?

BTW I have the "Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.1 for AMD SSE2/SSE3 (32bits)' one installed floating around on the bay

Using Toh kernel 9.1.0

I updated this afternoon, no problems. I'm running vanilla kernel (Kalyway 10.5.1) though.

I'm going to assume silfer has an AMD CPU since the AMD SSE2/SSE3 disc was specified in the first post.

AMD users should double check the forums before updating anything since they cannot run a stock vanilla kernel and need to patch more files before they can be used.

Anyone not running a vanilla kernel and PC_EFI should show caution before updating. Even EFI patched systems run the risk of updated files replacing patched extensions and disabling sound/network/video...you get the idea.

Before I do any updates I plug in an external USB drive and back up the entire system now.

Since I run all Intel machines, I can't advise you on the success...I can only recommend you backup before you try and be prepared to repatch or reinstall stuff.

Do you have a second Mac OS X install for emergency use and are familiar with Marvin's Utility?

If so then back up your custom kexts and kernel just in case (making a backup of the whole partition

for a quick restore in case things go very wrong would be a good idea too), apply the update

and then reboot into the other install and run Marvin's Utility to do a full decrypt/CPUID repair.

There should just be a few files with CPUIDs that need fixing, but no decrypts to do so Marvin's Utility

will abort (then just do the CPUID option with the CPUID file it created on the first run)

Restore your kexts and kernel, repair permissions just in case, and reboot with fingers crossed.

/me glares at Kalway users who can't read

I installed the updates using the same kernel and install dvd.....with efi v8.....and it hosed my box....I tried to fix it by copying 'Finder.app' from my mbp....didn't work

I isntalled fresh.....I made a backup and tried again....

Same thing.....Finder.app hosed...

I'm restoring again now. No more updates for me.

I may try the method above. Not familiar with Marvin's utility.....
