webtek23
I Finally got XP (on my master internal hard drive) and OSX (on my slave internal hard drive) to show up in the basic Windows boot loader using the chain0 trick. The problem is that when I select the Mac OS X operating system from the two choices it looks like it tries to load the OS and then simply returns to the same selection screen. Eventually I am forced to pick XP because OS X wont boot. I have the jumpers on my master drive in this position G E C A H F D B with C and D being selected. That is how they have always been (I never moved those pins) My slave drive is in this setup G E C A H F D B with pins connecting AB and EF. This is what it said to do on the drive to make it slave, but I still cant boot from it. Do I need to rearrange the pins or is it something else? By the way, I know that my OS X installation on my slave drive is working because when I uninstall my master drive and set the slave drive jumpers in a master config I can boot OS X. But I cant seem to boot it when I have my other drive connected????? webtek23
Ok so now it says Chain Boot Error. I cant get it to let me boot from OS X. I followed the Chain0 trick instructions perfectly as it shows the operating system. I just cant boot it. I have OS X 10.4.3 on the drive with Jas' all in one patch if that helps. And the slave drive that OS X is installed on is a 250GB Hitachi Parallel ATA internal IDE hard drive. Â Ill try that but I still need to be able to boot XP from my master disk. Will changing that setting in the BIOS disable that? Hagar
OSX86 likes to be on the primary master, maybe that is the problem. Â Try re-jumpering the drives so xp is slave.. then you need to find a way to boot both os'es.... Â Try setting the OSX partition active? use f8 to enter the darwin bootloader for xp.. Â There is a combination that will work, but you have to juggle a bit to find it, and you may need to install a bootloader like grub, acronis, lilo... Â hope this helps.. webtek23
Ok, well ill try messing around with the jumpers and maybe switch the two drives to make OSX the master drive. I already tried the current setting with Acronis OS selector and still no luck, but maybe after I mess around with the jumpers and master/slave configuration. Any other ideas? webtek23
Ok this is getting really annoying. I tried switching the jumpers and IDE cables so that the XP disk was the slave disk and OSX was primary. OSX booted great once again, but i couldnt see the XP disk to boot from. Even when I ran partition magic off a diskette I couldnt see the extra XP disk if it was slave instead of master. I cant figure out what to do. Who else has done this? I did the chain0 thing by taking the chain0 file of my 10.4.3 install DVD and then putting it on my C:\ drive, however the chain0 file is not actually on my OSX drive, it is only on the install DVD. Does that make a difference? I could also use some info on how exactly to change boot order in the Bios although I dont really see how this will help since I did that manually. Can someone please help Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/7857-cant-boot-from-slave-drive/#findComment-49405 Share on other sites
webtek23
Do you tried to change the boot order in the Bios that it boots from the slave disk?  Ok well I just looked through my Dell Dimension P4 1.9Ghz's Version A01 BIOS setting and couldnt even see my slave hard drive. I think its maybe because it is HFS+ format. Also where exactly do i make this change. I saw a Primary Drive 0 and 1 (0 was "Hard Drive" and 1 was "Off") and a Secondary Drive 0 and 1 (0 and 1 were both CR-ROM Reader). I saw an option for boot sequence but all I could see in that menu was three things in this order 1. Diskette Drive 2. Hard Disk Drive 3. IDE CD-ROM Drive  I also saw an IDE drive interface section. What exactly do I do to change the order that my system boots, and also why cant I see my slave drive? Hagar
my best guess: set your osx disk to primery master, set your xp disk to secondary master, set only the xp partition active, & with any luck, it should boot xp so you can use chain0... webtek23
how do i set my XP disk to secondary master? I have set the jumper pins so that the XP disk is the slave drive and the OSX disk is the master. In this setting I can boot OSX and thats it. I bring up start up disk and try to boot the Windows operating system from inside OSX it reboots and then returns to OSX. Same thing in XP. I run partition magic but I cannot set the OSX disk as active. I have done the Chain0 setting and can see OSX on the startup windows boot menu, but when I try to boot it, it says chain boot error. No Luck. So the only way to change operating systems is to manually change the jumper pins. Whatever drive is master, the operating system on that drive will boot. How can I get an easier method? Acronis wont show the slave drive. It only shows the master drive in the OS Selector unless I am missing something. What can I do? It would seem to me that you might want tot try to boot the install DVD and run disk utility against the volume to ensure that it's OK. Then, I'd make certain that the Disk is a system disk (another option on the utils menu). Other than that, Something like Acronis might work, but it ended up blowing away my Mac partition when I used it after the fact... webtek23
I tried ensuring the disk was ok.. I ran the verify disk option: everything was fine. I ran the verify disk permissions option just for good measure. There were 4 incorrect permissions so i told it to change them. I tried to find the option to make the disk a system disk, but I couldnt find it. Where exactly is that located? Ill try installing Acronis again tonight and see if that works Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/7857-cant-boot-from-slave-drive/#findComment-49851 Share on other sites
webtek23
I tried installing Acronis OS selector again and it still refuses to show my slave operating system. If I have OSX as slave drive it will not recognize. I think this whole thing could be summed up in the fact that I get a chain boot error whenever I try to boot OSX as slave drive. That obviously says something is wrong. I am still at a loss to figure out how to make the disk a system disk and also how to possibly make this work. I should have one drive as a master and one drive as a slave on the jumper settings right? And does the IDE cable location have to be the same as the jumper setting (i.e. if the drive is the master via the jumpers it has to be connected to the upper most slot on the IDE cable)??? Any ideas? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/7857-cant-boot-from-slave-drive/#findComment-50086 Share on other sites
