webtek23
I just got a 250GB ATA internal hard drive for the purpose of installing OSX onto it. I was running out of space on my old internal hard drive because I had numerous WinXP programs on there as well as the new OSX programs and operating system. I installed the second internal harddrive and set it as the slave drive on the jumpers as well as connecting it to the second IDE slot (not the top one). I tried to set as active so that I could install OSX, but no such luck. It simply booted back into windows XP. Can I install and boot another operating system from my second internal hard drive? Paralex
Yeah you can, just install osx on the slave drive. And follow my directions on how to to dual-boot them so you get a selection of which OS you want to boot. - Go into your OSX drive (you might need MacDrive to see the OSX contents) - Go to /usr/standalone/i386/ and copy the "chain0" file - Paste it (chain0) into your Windows root drive (C:\), so it should be like this "C:\chain0" - Click Start > Run > type in sysdm.cpl - Click the Advanced tab, then under Startup and Recovery, click Settings - Under System Startup click Edit (the file should open in notepad for editing) - Under "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="YOUR WINDOWS OS HERE" /fastdetect", insert the following: C:\chain0="Mac OS X" - In notepage, go to File > Save - Restart and you will see success! It will give you a choice of Windows or Mac OS X Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/7816-can-i-boot-osx-from-my-secondslave-internal-hard-drive/#findComment-49003 Share on other sites
sigxcpu
search for a file named "chain0" on the mac os dvd. copy this file to your windows c:\ edit c:\boot.ini (before that do an attrib -h -a -r -s c:\boot.ini in a cmd window) after the last line (that one with rdisk blah blah) add: c:\chain0="Mac OS X" save the file, do an attrib +h +a +r +s c:\boot.ini restart you will have a boot menu before starting windows with two options: Windows XP and Mac OS X. enjoy Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/7816-can-i-boot-osx-from-my-secondslave-internal-hard-drive/#findComment-49005 Share on other sites
webtek23
ok well thank you very much for that info becuase I will need that when I reach the point of needing to dual boot, however, at the moment I cannot get the computer to set the extra partition on the second intenal hard drive as active. I have the OS X DVD all ready to go, but I need the new drive to be set as active so I can get the "no operating system" warning so I can start installing OSX through that. Any thoughts about that? Paralex
wait your talking about installing osx on the second drive right? When your about to install OSX, and it gives you the choice of the drive you want to install, just go to "Utilities" then "Disk Utility" and erase the entire drive. Make sure its in Mac OSX Extended Journal format. After that, click ok, and continue with the install. edit: OH I get what you mean. Just put the disk in, then restart the PC, and then it should boot from the DVD. Metrogirl
Be careful in Disk Utility - you don't want to erase the *wrong* drive, eh? Be aware that some hardware combinations have a bug with Disk Utility during install. If the boxes don't seem to be taking your input grab the window with your mouse and jiggle it about a bit. This forces the window to redraw and the buttons, input etc. should reappear. webtek23
Well I tried booting from the install CD and it worked. I went to select the drive I wanted to install from and saw only the tiny partition I had previously created on my origional hard drive. So I tried the disk utilities and erased the HFS+ section of unallocated space that I had on the new 250GB drive (there is a NTFS partition on there too). It had a red X over the drive when I tried it later after exiting the Disk Utilities. It said that it could not install to the disk and that OSX could not boot from that disk. I know that there are jumper pins on internal ATA hard drives and I was wondering what configuration I should have them in. Does that make a difference? Also if it helps I am using the guide at this http://weblogs.upei.ca/node/2889 site. I cant figure out what is wrong and why it wont let me install. By the way I did try the "erase" button in Disk Utilities and that still did not work Edited January 27, 2006 by webtek23 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/7816-can-i-boot-osx-from-my-secondslave-internal-hard-drive/#findComment-49075 Share on other sites
webtek23
So I tried setting the jumper pins in some different locations, each time rebooting and trying the OSX install DVD again. Everytime I got the same message that OSX could not install or boot from that drive. I tried putting the pins in the master config, slave, config, and even took them both out. No luck. Im at a loss here for what to do. webtek23
Ok, well I FINALLY got OS X installed on the second external hard drive. I had to uninstall the first hard drive so that the new one was the only one connected. Then I had to format it in the NFS+ file system and then run Erase in the Disk Utilities program during the OSX install. My new problem is that I cannot get my system to recognize the new operating system to boot from. Is there any way to get Acronis OS Selector to recognize it? I tried the previously mentioned tecniques, but it appears that once you install Acronis it is very hard to get back to the normal windows boot options screen during startup. Is there a way to enable it? I tried uninstalling Acronis, but it asks you what OS you want to be default and then after that I could not get the windows OS selection screen to come up. Anyone know what I could do? Finally, I had to format the entrire 250GB HD in HFS+ format. I want some of it in NTFS. I cant change it in Partition Magic, so how do I do it? Will I have to use disk utilities in OS X?
