so, after some research and a topic regarding EFI on an AMD system, my original thoughts have been confirmed...EFI can be installed on an AMD system but will not result in the same ease of use that it would on and intel system.

new question:

i would like to utilize a GUID partition scheme for the external hard drive that i have leopard installed on. i erased the partitions off of it last night and converted it to a GPT drive in windows vista. i then booted off of the tiger installation DVD and formatted the drive into 3 partitions and proceeded with installation. after the install completed successfully and rebooted, my bios would not initialize the drive and proceed with its post procedure. so, i was wondering...if i install EFI v8, will that allow my motherboard to boot from a GUID partitioned drive? nevermind the vanilla kernel stuff, i already know that i still need to install with the Zephyroth DVD in order for leopard to work on my AMD system. i just want to know if EFI v8 will help my system boot from a GUID partitioned drive.

thank you

dylan

I'm very interested to hear what you find out. I don't know whether pc-efi works with AMD and if so whether it works with GUID, but I'm not aware of any particularly pressing reason why it shouldn't. Naturally, as the OP mentioned, it would not allow any "vanilla" flavours, but GUID in itself is worth trying out.

Please try to remember that pc-efi is not the same as EFI itself, this easily causes confusion.

i did it!

i followed netkas instructions on how to set a guid partition as bootable, installed leopard, imported my user settings from a tiger installation on a mbr drive, installed pc efi v8, and all is good. i now have a fully functional leopard installation booting from a guid partition.

whats the benefit of having pc-efi and a guid partition table compared to bios and mbr?

@ForeignNicknameDude

EFI and GUID pretty much make you have a complete Mac without the shiny white casing. If you have a Core 2, you (should) be able to install updates right from Apple needing little or no hacking at all. BIOS and MBR is another story...
