snappy22
I originally posted this in the Leopard OSX86 Installation forum, but I now realized this was probably a more appropriate place. I am hoping someone could suggest what PCI (not express) video cards are supported with Leopard that can also support QE/CI. I am not concerned with CI as much as QE. I currently have an onboard Intel GMA X3100 (from an ASUS P5K-VM) and an EVGA 8600GT 512MB. I believe the GMA X3100 is supported by Leopard but my motherboard doesnt supply a DVI port. I was thinking of getting an adapter and trying it, but incase it doesn't work or has no support, I was wondering what cards maybe worth looking at for full support in OSX86. The ones I have in mind currently are the Geforce FX5200 and the Radeon 9250, which both have PCI variants. Anyone know if these work with EQ/CI? Or could someone please suggest further options. I'm not looking for something high-end that can play games or do intensive graphics work. I'm more interested in something reasonably affordable to get Quartz going. I can always dual boot into Vista if I want to play games (with my 8600gt). Thanks. vladthebad
Best Buy PNY FX5200 256mb PCI card.... dual head, PCI.... CI/QE, res switching, etc... fully working in 10.4.8 I don't run leo yet, so I don't know about that... The one I have has two VGA ports.... and I couldn't get it to work in dual head mode... until I found the right NVCAP Correct NVCAP for my card is: 04000100 00000200 01000000 0000000A 00000000 There are also FX5200 PCI models available with 1 DVI port and 1 VGA port... should also do dual head support, may have to find the right NVCAP though. Schwinn555
I see you have already ordered a card. The 5200 should run fine. I can tell you my Intel GMA 950 graphics with an "Add 2" adapter for DVI support is I feel a better graphics experience then my PCI 5500 card. If your Intel x3100 graphics work with the Mac OS I'm guessing it would also be better then the PCI 5200 card. As you likely know the x3100 is newer & faster then the 950 graphics and the 5500 card is newer and faster then the 5200 card. The "add 2" card is just an adapter and requires no driver etc . I just plugged it in and it works Mac ,Windows or Linux. It also lets you use 2 monitors the original motherboard vga and the DVI on the Add 2 card. So yes I'm sorry to say IMHO the 5200 card is a step backwards over the x3100 .
