I have some requirements... whatever laptop i buy I will put in a larger hard-disk and more ram. It will be used primarily for photo editing and proofing, though also Logic work. I don't do video at this time. I am fond of Aperture and use Photoshop and Illustrator extensively. I would likely triple boot with windows and linux... The question is: do i spend $1299 on a baseline macbook (with superdrive, importantly) + $150 for a 250gb HD (and use the 120gb in an enclosure i already own) + $50 for 2GB of ram with a total of $1500 or get a "PC" laptop and run as a hackbook, getting more for the same $1500. I will happily do this if the value to performance ratio is better. Any recommendations? See my sig for my current system... It seems to me, and I don't mind being corrected, but at that pricepoint the only improvement i could get is say an nvide 8600m gt instead of the x3100, but I don't think i could get my 250gb HD and 2gb of ram with at least a 2.2ghz processor plus an 8600m for us$1500 can I? kuruu Posted November 24, 2007 Author Share Posted November 24, 2007 well, whether a macbook is worth it is in not in question, they are 'good value' if that's all you need, but I obviously want a bit more without going for the mbp... now if the black macbook sported an 8600m, i'd go that. there is an asus and a hp model. I wouldn't trust the HP, but asus is a brand not known for falling in a heap and it's more likely repairable where I will be... I guess it comes down to: I want a macbook pro, but don't want to spend the money. I can get an asus with it's bigger (17" screen) and heavier but ultimately better value. Though I have a greater wish for an apple product, the graphics and display make up a big part of the computer.
