Hey everybody,

In a nutshell:

For the past 4 days I have tried nearly every technique posted on the majority of forums/websites to install OSX86 on my Intel Compaq C504US laptop without any luck! I tried different versions, dvd boots, and partition boots. I've created the necessary partitions and succeeded in copying the images to the new partition (individually, of course). PLEASE HELP ME!

Background:

Specs: - Compaq C504US, Intel Celeron M CPU, 440 @ 1.86 GHz, 2 GB of RAM, Windows XP SP2 operating system, SATA disabled (originally Vista machine) (XP requires SATA be disabled in BIOS)

Partition: I created a primary partition using the following code:

DISKPART> create partition primary size=6660 id=af

or

DISKPART> create partition primary id=af

OSX86: I have never had OSX86 installed on my machine

Machine: My machine runs XP SP2, but was originally designed for Vista, so I have disabled SATA support on it.

CD/DVD Burning: - Roxio Easy Media Creator 10.

- I used the slowest possible burn speeds

- utilized "make bootable" option at all times

OSX86 versions:

  1. Mac OS X 10.4.8 [JaS AMD-Intel-SSE2-SSE3 with PPF1 & PPF2].iso (4.37 GB)
  2. XxX_OS_x86_10.4.10_Install_Disc Patch PPF1.iso (1.85 GB)
  3. leopard-x86-flat-img (no proper file extension given) (16 GB when unpacked)
  4. Brazilmac (4.37 GB)

Image copying from NTFS to 0xAF partition: done using DD.EXE with the following code (XXX.ISO=filename located in C: drive):

dd if=c:\XXX.ISO of=\\?\Device\Harddisk0\Partition2 bs=32256 skip=1 --progress

VMWare:

- operating system: other:other

- floppy disk: disable

- CDRom: c:\XXX.ISO

- Harddrive: mydocuments:\vmware\osx

boot.ini modification: C:\chain0="OS X86"

RESULTS:

1) disc boot:

- missing operating system

2) vmware:

- no bootable device was found

- operating system not found

3) marking new partition as active:

- Chain booting error

- MBR error 3

- MBR error 1

So, as you can see, it seems as though I've tried nearly every way possible to install OSX86 on my Intel machine and am still failing. To me, the biggest frustration is that I'm unable to even get the Apple install screen to load... I've followed detailed instructions that seem to have worked for other people. I'm reading posts detailing success that are over 2 years old, so I doubt that my equipment is out-of-date. I'm completely stumped!

Thank you.

Thank you so much for your input!

How does one determine whether a burned copy is corrupt? I burned all of my DVDs as bootable. Should I try burning them as regular data DVDs? Below is a list of my burn options; the ones I used are indicated with a star (*) and underlined.

Easy Media Creator 10

1. CD Recording Options

Type:

- Track at Once, Open

- Track at Once, Closed

*- Disc at Once, Closed

Mode:

*- Mode 1

- Mode 2 XA

File System:

*- ISO+ Joliet (106 character file names)

- ISO+ Joliet+UDF (106 character file names)

- ISO Level 2 (212 character file names)

2. Write-Once DVD Compatibility

I would like to use discs for more than one recording. (This option lets you add data in the future, but fewer DVD drives will be able to read the disc.)

*- YES

- NO

** I'm burning these DVDs to use only on my laptop, which is why I'm enabling

3. Drive Speed

1. CD: 10x

2. DVD: 2x

** the speed options are the slowest possible with Roxio Easy Media Creator 10

Thanks again.

Usually when burning an iso image you shouldn't need those options: just see if your burning software has a menu item named something like "Burn CD/DVD image". You shouldn't burn the iso as a simple file. If you need to chose whether the dvd is bootable or not, they you're not doing it right, since the iso itself contains that information. Read your burning app(s) manual.

Burn at slow speed, on non-rewritable media to increase reliability.

I think you do everthing wrong. I have no idea if your roxio software has the image burning possibilty, actually I would get rid of anything roxio have ever made but thats me. But if it has then you should find it, or get the simple but slick image burning app... called imgburn. And start with the Jas 10.4.8 you have. When it is burned put that DVD into your computer and see if it is booting. If it is you are good to go, remember that you have a SSE2 CPU and ensure you install the proper kernel. You should not do any DD'ing at all. As you have already done the disk partioning you should only be required to format the drive to HFS+ from disc utility in the installer.By the way, so doesn't XP need to disable SATA, but you have to use a driver during XP installation.
