You'll need at the very least, a 4gb stick and a bios that allows for booting from usb first. I have a pny 6gb stick with just the basic OS on it and MS Office 2004 and CopyCatX. It works just as well as from the main hard drive except way way slower. A good tool though for restoring the OS from an image file with CopyCatX.

 

I also have a WD 80gb 2.5" USB powered drive with everything on it except CS3 and FCS2. I use it for the same purpose, but also as the source disk for migrating my files (migration assistant) when installing new versions of the OS. Saves a ton of time. The 80Gb drive is much faster than the stick, and could be used in a pinch, but still slower than a 7200RPM SATA II drive.
