Hello.

I am building an OSx86 PC from the ground up, and would like some input before I purchase the hardware. The hardware compatibility guide is a bit dated, so I must differ to the forums.

I will be primarily using this machine for audio recording and editing via a firewire mixer, which comes with OS X drivers.

As such, all of the below MUST work or the whole deal is off:

Sound (all audio in/out ports must work)

Firewire (for the mixer)

USB (for external hard drive)

Working LAN would be good too

Here are my core specs thus far (I tried to mimic a Mac as closely as possible):

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 @ 2.33Ghz/1333Mhz FSB

RAM: 2GB Corsair DDR2 667

GPU: 7300GT (I don't play games, so this card will do just fine)

HD: Western Digital 250GB SATA

Optical: Asus SATA 18x DVD burner

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-G33M-DS2R

NB: G33

SB: Intel ICH9R

Audio: Realtek ALC889A

LAN: Realtek RTL8111B

Is this board okay? Would another board provide better compatibility outside of the box? If so, pray tell.

Regards,

Jeff

according to me ditch the g33 chipset... there r much better boards.. if u want a mordern build.. go with the p35.

also 667 ram.. upgrade to 800mhz atleast... the prices have dropped bigtime for the 800 ne ways... im sure ull get a good deal... also i dont know about audio in/s ... u probably will need a external usb card. as well.. outs seem 2 work fine ith realteks... but i dont know.. ull haveta read up for this...

I want a mATX board, hence the G33. There are no mATX P33 motherboards to my knowlede. Performance wise, the G33 will be just as fast as the P35 parts (they use pretty much identicle N and SBs, except that the G33 has an integrated IGP).

Okay, I changed the board to the Gigabyte GA-945GCMX-S2, as I heard the Intel 945GC has near perfect compatibility.

Isn't the 945 chipset too old?

Why don't you buy a Bad Axe 2 (Intel® Desktop Board D975XBX2):

(A much better board from every point of view).

Be careful with some g33 based boards. Most work but my g33 foxconn just goes into an eternal reboot sequence due to the new acpi power management that was applied to it. g33 based msi have the same problem.Beware.I know the gigabyte works and so does the the g33 based boards in xpc shuttles

He has said that he changed the board to a Gigabyte GA-945GCMX-S2 which is an excellent choice for running Leopard and EFI :D Just make sure you get the latest revision, 6.6 :)
