System Preferences/Network/Advanced/WINS tab/Workgroup

That IS where it gets set in Leopard. After changing it and clicking OK then Apply. Wait a minute then check /var/run/smb.conf and you will see "workgroup = xxx" has changed to what you put in the WINS tab. Unless this was broken in 10.5, I know it definitely works 10.5.1.

It does not.

Nothing changes to the smb.conf and i also have 10.5.1

For check reasons, put a new workgroup name that it is not in the list already. After a while if you browse the net with a Windows machine you must see the new workgroup. You will not.

Any other ideas anyone?

It does. :) Just because you don't like an answer doesn't make it wrong.

I tried it with a name not in the list before I posted. /var/run/smb.conf changed. /etc/smb.conf won't change because it contains defaults that are overridden by the other file.

Windows machines won't see it unless you have windows file sharing turned on (prefs / file sharing / options / smb) or start smbd and nmbd manually. Again, I have verified this 10 minutes ago with a windows 2000 pc. It works.

If this is not working for you try posting a question such as "my system's samba does not work the way everyone elses does" or maybe reinstall leopard. The original question of how to change workgroups has been answered, correctly.

I dont like the answer ?

That was nice, thank you for helping..

Maybe you think i want to show off or something.

I am trying to do a job here.

I must make connection with the network in a company and this thing does not work like it use to work with Tiger.

IT DOES NOT WORK !

How must i say it?

Erbic and you are both true, this is the way to change the workgroup. But i say from the start it is not changing! There is no matter if I like it or not.

It does not work! (For me and for others after some googling)

Thats why I was asking, any one has any idea?

System Preferences>Network>Advanced>WINS IS the solution. But...

10.5.0/.1 will NOT retail workgroup settings if the location is "Automatic". So, simply create a new "Location, set it up just as automatic, and set your wins settings. Make sure you hit "apply" as well. Good luck!
