when i try to boot without the cd i get an error

so i guess bootloader is no good? and it uses the install cd bootloader...

any easy fix?

and while we're at it

how do i get multiboot with xp to work on the same HD

i got both os's set on different paritions but i can only set one partition to boot

so i set XP(because for now osx won't boot anyway), and used the chain0 file with the boot.ini to add the osx option to the boot menu but it won't do anything it just returns to the boot menu

any help would be appreciated.

With the chain0 method, when you select osx, press F8 right away after so you get the darwin boot menu, where you'll get another choice of os to boot; it boots the active partition by default, which would be your osx in this case.

To avoid having to press F8 each time and get the darwin boot menu right away, check the Messing with the boot options topic in the OSx86 wiki.

If you installed one of your osx in a logical partition, don't expect it to boot normally by itself; it has to be a primary partition (there are conditions under which a logical will do, but i wouldn't normally recommend it).

Search wiki and/or the forum for more info on the chain0 method.

If that doesn't help, give more information about your partitioning scheme, hardware, etc. The more details you give, the more the people here will be able to help you.

Ok thanks for the reply, ill try making it clearer then.

what i did was take a HD,

start OS x install, with disk utility partition to 1 os x journaled partition and 1 left ms-dos or unallocated.

installed os x

then insert xp disc

install on the ms dos partition while converting it to ntfs.

now im not exactly sure what this means in terms of which partition is primary and which logical.

xp setup set its own partition to boot, so i copied to chain0 file to the xp partition.

and added some line to the boot.ini

then when the xp boot menu appeared, i chose the os x option but i only get the xp boot menu again.

besides that os x won't even boot properly when its partition IS set to boot...

Im using a Dell inspiron 8200 laptop with SSE2 cpu and slot of hardware which im sure is not that important for fixing this problem :o

hmmm, i might be a bit confused on what you are saying but here would be some things to check...

if your bootl menu is comming up, and when you select Mac OS X it just flashes and goes back to the boot menu, that means that darwin isnt booting to the correct partition. you need to make sure that the mac boot (plist i think) file has darwin set to not boot up silently. (let me know if you need me to find the path to that file, or run a search here)

if the boot menu dosent come up at all, make sure your windows partition is set as the active partition. make sure chain0 is in the root of your windows partition.

hope this helps!

If you cant get xp multiboot working...

Get into xp, download and install Acronis Disk Director Suite. Once rebooted, install the Acronis OS Selector by going to start->all programs->Acronis->Acronis Disk Director Suite->Install Acronis OS Selector. Once you reboot, you should be prompted with all your installed operating systems. Note- this will only work if you have your two operating systems installed on the SAME hdd. Choose whichever OS you would like to boot from....and hopefully it will work.

if you are still haivng problems the best way i found to fix immediate problems is to stick your OS X disc in the drive and press f8 on command and then boot with -s flag (so at prompt it should be boot:-s) and boot into single user mode then issue the command:

fdisk -u /dev/rdisk0

and follow the prompts. now the darwin bootloader will be on the mbr and osx will be the default os. if you want windows you will have to mash the f8 button. its a little goofy however once you get this working again you can reset and edit the darwin bootloader to have a delay so you can choose os, i think you can even tell it to boot off xp without asking. do some googling i am still figuring it out my self (i had to break my mbr again last night, and i installed os x on a logical partition after an extended partition :happymac:)

speaking of which you COULD use grub (their is lots of material out their on GRUB) IF your partition with OS X is on a primary (prefereably first) partition and just chainloader +1 or chain0. i couldn't get either of these to work becuz i installed on a logical partition inside (or after which ever you prefer) an extended partition. tip to people partitioning hardrive: MAKE YOUR OS X DRIVE FIRST PARTITION AND PRIMARY your life will become easier i promise!!!!
