Boot Manager and Backup / Restore software

looking for:

- Boot Manager

- Backup / restore software

since working with uphuck and windows, things get messy,

and once it does not boot, the stress starts....

- Boot Manager

should be able to install from CD or flash drive, without a working OS,

and support HFS,NTFS, EXT osx, windows, linux

top choices,

Bootit ng http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/

acronis disk director suite, http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/produ...n-recovery.html

anybody have experience or prefferences ?

- Backup Software

should be able to restore a working OS, from usb or firewire drive

tried

superduper works , but needs a working os, and does not resolve boot problems,

for osx only

xcopycat , can do ntfs with macfuse, again working os required,

anybody used this for windows / vista backup restore ?

can bootit or acronis , be used for that? and how you do it ?

notes:

since backup can take a lots of time, and lots of disk space,

thinking, it would be better to separate, OS from applications/user data, aka separate partition

in OSX, applications and users can be linked to different partition

in windows, it gets messy with registry, probably need extra software for that, which one ?

partitions:

max of 4 primary, so how do you split it up ?

time: how long does it take to backup / restore ?

appreciate your input and insight ! thanks!

Hi rschultz:

I know it's old but I use Norton Ghost 2003 (our company uses this). It works perfectly use Windows XP and compresses the images down. It works with Mac OS X partitions but it doesn't compress the image file very much.

I usually install Mac OS X first and use Disk Utility to create the partitions. After that, I use Norton Ghost 2003 to re-image the un-used partition with Windows XP image. Then I use Darwin's Boot Manager to manage the OS partitions.

I've also used Apple's Disk Utility to clone drives, but there are too many steps to get it working afterwards.

--danyel :P

don't know how darwin bootloader works

problem I have , is after uphuck it won't boot without a cd

I tried,

boot -s, fdisk -e , p 1 , write , quit

startup , restart

don't know, where to add entry for win XP ?

grub, linux, don't know how to install, without repartition , and full install of linux distro ,

plus , it needs to reside on a fat32 or ext,

yesterday also tried, das boot , with a usb flash, on fat it won't see it, with hfs, says, insufficient space in volume,

once that boot's, that would give xcopycat a try, did not work ,

backup, last year, I used a older norton ghost version, to re image, aka transfere, and was a disaster,

no clear support for HFS journaled, did call support, very litle docu on that, so got burned,

also recall, it was very slow.

for the backup , also , like to be able to do a incremental backup .

did download acronis boot director, clicked on create boot thing, and saved to flash drive,

did not boot, what am I missing, I'll try the cd .iso

also need to figure out, how to partition for a backup restore,

what file system, fat32, but has 4gb file size limit, how is that going to work with a 20gb image,

is the backup software, aka acronis, beeing able to backup and restore a windows image from an mac file system ?

or over the network, from another mac ? can I use the backup software , over a firewire drive, when the firewire port on the laptop

is in a expresscard slot ? usb is to slow, and on a laptop, you don't have a second sata port ?

sorry for , so many questions, appriciate any hints or tips , you do, thanks

Acronis boot manager needs FAT32 or NTFS partion

so back to square one, so for HFS disk only, need to be partitioned from scratch,

and one partition in fat or ntfs, for fat32 , grub be an option, but don't know how to install grub only ? anybody knows ?

backup question , does acronis do HFS journaled backups ? and what partition does it need for that ? fat32 , NTFS, can it write the backup to HFS ?

Ghost 12 is Vista compatible and can copy HFS+ drives right from within windows. As someone else said it compresses the windows partitions/drives but not so much the HFS+ partitions/drives. It works well and is dependable. I like CopyCatX the best. It does XP partitions but I've never tried it with Vista. I have an 8gb thumbnail drive to boot my OSX in to make the images. Works great and is very fast.

Acronis can do HFS+ partitions and you can image to either FAT32 or NTFS partitions. Just remember that it will have to break up the image into 4gb pieces on FAT32. Same thing with Ghost 12 btw.

Acronis TrueImage does sector by sector backup of hfs partitions; writes on fat/ntfs, not hfs.

On fat32, even with 4gb limit, you can tell ti to cut up image in pieces.

Also, i recommend you zero out empty space on osx with diskutility; this will make much better compression.

/edit: bjm beat me to it...

how to erase the disk, including mtbr with diskutil ?

need to start from scratch,... do have ultimate boot too, or systemrescue, haven't used it thought,...

did format the second partition with fat with diskutil, installed acronis boot loader that did not work,...

so how do you partion ? so you can install a bootloader, and use some backup/restore software ?

im using darwin as boot loader.pretty simple...ive got a PATA HDD, so what i did was partition it into 3, that makes 2 primary for the win and mac os, and 1 logic, anyways you can part logic as much as you would like later... 1st primary is ntfs for windows and fat32 for 2nd and 3rd parts... install windows first then osx next...not sure about vista coz vista gets corruptd after installing osx. i think you have to fix vista boot loader after installing osx...

you have to edit osx boot loader to use darwin. there is a tutorial for it somewhere here.

you can zero out free space using diskutil...so just select your mac hd then erase free space...then boot to windows where your acronis is. make a backup of your osx. the backup file size should be about half of your used mac os part...
