sol-invictus
Welcome in my world! http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=64589 I have no solution for this... So what do we have in common: I have also an Intel Southbridge ICH - i have the ICH8M maybe this is the source of our problems... @ zaiby What hardware do you have? orByte
So what do we have in common: I think this could be an issue with the 1333 FSB. Same problem here on an ECS G31T-M: Hangs with cpus=1, and reboots with anything else. Northbridge: Intel g31, southbridge: ICH7, cpu=6550 C2D 2.33. Though on the Gigabyte GA-945GCMX-S2 board, it would hang with cpus=2. But I did not try the cpus=1 there. The GA board is nice but does not always post up with 1333. pinterested
Same issue here, hangs with cpus=1 and reboots otherwise. This is known good DVD media on a ECS G31T-M Motherboard. This has an intel dual core 2 cpu at 2.33ghz. The motherboard is based on the G31 Northbridge (GB) and the ICH7 Southbridge.. The DDR2 ram i currently have is at 667 MHZ. orByte
I tried this on the ECS g31M with a core 2 1.6MHz CPU (800MHz Bus speed) with 10.4.8, 10.4.9, and 10.4.10 and still got the same result. So unlike my earlier speculation, it probably is not the bus speed but something else that is going on. orByte
I am lost my self mate . mabey it does not help with the name of the thread dont really know what to change it to to get more help I m wondering if this is a chipset issue? I had similar difficulties with the intel g33 chipset. The question is whether it is a simple "device ID" related issue that will be easy to patch, or whether it is a complex thing involving multiple parts of the kernel and OS... We could call it booting problems with the intel g31 chipset. BUT the search engine does not recognise anything under 4 letters so a search for g31 would not even come up with anything... Edit: i945PM might work though... Has anyone else had success with that chipset? orByte
Hmmm... The problem does indeed seem to stem from a misidentification of the number of CPUS (cores) in the system. The ECS g31t board is quad-core ready, and I wonder if this has something to do with it. The MSI quad-core ready board I have had a BIOS setting for limiting CPUid<3, but the ECS board does not have that. It might make a difference. I ll look at it too. But it does seem that the problem might be with the CPU/core detection code of the kernel. Normal Boot: AppleACPICPU: ProcessorApicId=0 LocalApicId=0 Enabled AppleACPICPU: ProcessorApicId=1 LocalApicId=1 Enabled ECS g31t failed boot with cpus=1. (cpus=2,3,4 causes immediate restart) The failed boot identifies 4 cpus/cores. Any help/insight from our kernel developer friends would be greatly appreciated! orByte
Further insights... Failed boot with cpus=1 (noapic option has no effect, limiting maxcpuid in BIOS has no effect.) Chipsets: intel g31 (ECS g31t-m) and g33 (msi g33m) Succesful boot Chipset: i945 Express (GA-945GCMX-S2) Using single user version of Semthex_2_ on 10.4.8. It looks like the system hangs while the AppleAPIC kext is loaded and starting the cpus. I have also tried AppleAPIC v. 1.0.1 (10.4.7) and 1.2.0 (10.4.9) but no change. Unfortunately I do not know enough about kernel level/APIC/interrupt programming to pursue the issue further. Hopefully someone else will have a look at it. lancorp
Having the same issue with a Dell Optiplex 745 Small Form Factor with C2D 1.83Ghz and Kalyway 10.4.10. Except my boot screen shows something like EIGHT CPU's!!!! (6 are disabled)/ I've tried all the suggested above. BIOS settings don't seem to change the screen. The last line on the screen shows something about "USB caused wake event (EHCI)", then it pauses for a long time and says "still waiting for root device". It just keeps repeating that. I can boot and install on a Uphuck 10.4.9 r1.3 DVD, and the install completes, but when I reboot, I immediately get the grey and black multilanguage "you're screwed" screen and have to power off and back on. Any ideas? Kaly???? orByte
Well, I have been reading around, checked out Netkas' blog and it looks like the offending kext is the AppleACPIPlatform.kext. The thing is the ACPIPlatform v 1.2.0 (10.4.9, 10.4.10) will hang regardless of cpus= setting and the 10.4.8 version of the kext will hang with cpus=1 and reboot otherwise... SO at this time, I would recommend people avoid the intel g31 and g33 chipsets (assuming it is a chipset thing). Best. orByte
I have been testing an Asrock Conroe-1333 DVI/H R2.0. And guess what? Even though the board is only rated for dual core, it still reported four cores and had the reboot problem. But after downgrading the BIOS to version P 1.50 - the board worked fine! In fact, any BIOS up to 1.50 works... But BIOSs greater than 1.50 do not. So, there is something going on at the BIOS level? Hope this helps some people out there. Disclaimer: Try this at your own risk. Make sure you apply the appropriate BIOS - even then read BIOS upgrade cautions that come with the BIOS first. Improperly applied BIOS could stop your board from booting. Best. orByte
Well i have an ADVENT 7113 laptop cant find any bios updates at all Hi, it may not be an update, but a 'backwards'-date. As for the Asrock board, the current BIOS version is 1.80. But for a laptop, it's probably going to be tough, as suitable BIOS updates or backdates will be scarse, unless someone can figure out how to make the BIOS and kernel agree... What a strange thing though... Best.
