phee Nom Tracks
Alright, so i love my hackintoshes (all 4 of them) and i recently got a new job so im planning on biting the bullet and purchasing everything legally. the questions is....imac or Mac Pro. i will be using my mac to produce full movie scores and edit video as well as basic music production. i want to get a machine thats powerful enough to run fcp,Gb,Logic 8, pro tools and probably a browser simultaneously. will the new 24 inch imac be powerful enough to run this? and does it support my two external monitors? and as far as longevity.. which machine will i be able to upgrade and keep going for the longest time possible before having to purchase a new one. thank you for your help and suggestions. oh yea, and when is leopard being released because i dont want to have to pay and extra $$$ to get the new OS a week after my mac arrives. mifki
Umm, thats sort of like comparing a dell to a BOXX workstation . Get the Mac Pro. the imac only has a mini-dvi port Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/64705-imac-or-mac-pro/#findComment-458251 Share on other sites
Synaesthesia
Mac Pro all the way. It satisfies all your requirements. The iMac is fast, but not upgradeable, can't run 2 external displays (only one). The Mac Pro will serve you for a much longer time. It also has those neato hard drive drawers. So cool. mumford
The Mac Pro is too noisy. The fan sounds as loud as a hurricane. So, unless you need quad cores and most people do not, get an IMac or build your own silent hackintosh. Yami Bakura
The Mac Pro is too noisy. There was a EFI Firmware update on Thursday. Check that. The Mac Pro might be more quieter after the update. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/64705-imac-or-mac-pro/#findComment-459842 Share on other sites
gloria
Honestly, if you want to be running Pro-Tools, FCP and all this intensive multimedia apps..and you have a little money... why not just get a tower? Talk about upgradable - forget about it. I would get a MacPro and install at least 3B of ram just to start with (and many more should you ever need them). REALLY look into this decision. The iMac is so damn beautiful it's tempting...and it' a little more flashy but not as powerful or forward thinking. (the ram limitations are gonna kill you one day) If you need to skimp the budget a bit, go for a refurb. or used, dual core G5 PPC ...still better for your needs than any non-tower. I promise. (also save on the display and get a non-apple one) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/64705-imac-or-mac-pro/#findComment-461160 Share on other sites
Synaesthesia
The iMac is still great for some things. But for hardcore video and stuff, the Mac Pro wins, I mean, come on? It has those drawers so you can just pop in additional storage so easily :0 It's really just between a new mac pro or a quad-core hackintosh. jimmyallman
I was stuck decideing this last week, however on friday i decided to go with the mac pro and im pleased to say it was the right choice. I Won an auction on ebay for some additional ram so im still expecting that arrving some time this week but with the 2.66 model and with only 1 GB of ram its been able to take some hefty projects on logic 8. I use IK Amplitube for guitars and have 6 guitar tracks and IK ampeg for bass then i have 1 instance of sculpture running and Ultra beat for some electronic samples and XLN Addictive drums. Logic 8 appears to have 4 bars showing on the CPU meter, for the 4 cores i'd assume and theyre all relatively low. One thing i might add is that if i run the monitoring app i forgot what its called it shows the memory load is high with 1 GB of ram. gloria
Cool- great choice. Recording is fine with a gig but once you start mixing and have processor intensive plug in upon processor intensive plug in ...you will be happy you ordered that extra RAM. (Plus you mentioned FCP earlier so...) Anyways, goo choice and congrats on your new baby! jimmyallman
Yeah i totally agree gloria i cant wait to see the difference with 4GB of ram. Im going to be using Max MSP at university and doing a lot of work with bands i have lined up so hopefully this machine will last a good few years !
