dimond
Ok, so here is my problem: I have installed (with DD and HD image) 10.4.6 on my laptop. Now, I want to upgrade to 10.4.10 (or 10.4.11), but doing the method described in the stickied post (I believe it was stickied) causes my whole system to go under, forcing me to re-install. I want to upgrade, in order to install new apps and such, but I have about a month of work on my current install, so I don't want to take any risks. I cannot use an update DVD because my DVD drive is busted. What can I do? Thanks, dimond Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/63483-1046-to-10410-or-greater/ Share on other sites
josh256
easy no risk method: Buy a cheap USB miniIDE hard drive for <$50 (or miniSATA if your laptop is more recent).. swap that drive w/ your internal and do a clean 10.4.9 install and port your user data when prompted (after welcome screen) (obviously you will need an external DVD drive if you're not going to replace/repair your existing) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/63483-1046-to-10410-or-greater/#findComment-449926 Share on other sites
dimond
Ah. Forgot to mention, it(laptop) will not read ANY DVD drive, external (ie USB) or internal. I believe it is a known problem, but there is no solution. josh256
Ahh, my bad... that sucks - well if you're *sure* USB drives wont work then you need another PC. Any computer can be used to install the 10.4.9 (to the new mini-IDE drive in the USB enclosure).. grab a recent Uphuck and be sure to re-partition the drive with the options tab/button set to MBR (should default to HFS+ file system). After it installs don't let it reboot and swap that drive w/ the one in your laptop (if you reboot after installation on the other PC you will need to delete /System/Library/Extensions.mkext /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache and /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernelblabllabla... before switching the drive back to your laptop as they are mapped to a different HW configuration).. now you have 10.4.9 "in" the laptop and your old 10.4.6 in an external enclosure.. ... then during the welcome/login process import your old user settings/data Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/63483-1046-to-10410-or-greater/#findComment-449944 Share on other sites
dimond
Offtopic: Does this mean that you have "green demon" invites? Could I get one, because that seems to be the place to get the uphuck DVD. Ontopic: (if the above is possibe), then I will get the uphuck image, and try to install, using another computer that *may* be available to me.
