Headcell
[Moderators: Not sure if this would be better off in the "Installation" forum. Sorry if I've misposted.] Hello, I have searched the forums, but can't find the solution I'm looking for. I'm completely new to this, so I'm unsure of the correct terminology, so it's possible my search was wide of the mark. If so, my appologies. My system copmprises a Gigabyte GA-p965-DS3 motherboard together with 2MB RAM and nVidia GeForce 8500 GPU with 512MB RAM (I understand that this card is not yet supported in OS X, and the 'hacks' that exist do not support 512MB cards). I have tried following the instructions in this thread:http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=26858&hl=GA-p965-DS3, but I've hit a snag. I'm using the latest uphuck image (which I think is for OS X 1.4.8). I'm using an external DVD-ROM drive. It's an IDE device but is sitting in a USB enclosure. This works fine, and I can boot from the drive, and installation starts without problem. The hard drive I am using is a Maxtor 120GB SATA drive. I don't have the model to hand, but I know it is working. It has five partitions. 1 for Win XP (NTFS), another the Mac OS (FAT32), and the remainder are as yet unformatted. BIOS recognises the hard drive (plugged into the purple SATA port, as per the instructions), and during the initial part of the install, the HDD activity light is constantly on. However, once the installation gets going, it asks me to select a disk to install the OS on. However, no disk is listed. I though that maybe there was a problem with the formatting, so I entered the Disk Utilty application (via one of the menus along the top of the screen) but this also failed to display the disk. So, can anyone suggest what I may be doing incorrectly? What do I need to do to get the install to recognise my hard drive? Many thanks for any help, Headcell Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/63108-solved-no-hdd-detected-latest-uphuck-with-gigabyte-p965-ds3/ Share on other sites
hecker
SATA drives are problematic. If you can, try installing OSX on an IDE drive. You can later clone your installation onto the SATA drive if necessary. hecker Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/63108-solved-no-hdd-detected-latest-uphuck-with-gigabyte-p965-ds3/#findComment-446867 Share on other sites
Headcell
Alas, the the P965 chipset (as implemented by the Gigabyte mobo) does not natively support IDE. So I don't have that option. That didn't stop me trying - but all I got was a grey screen with the Apple logo, overlayed with a 'no access' type symbol. But once OS X is loaded, there is a hack to make the IDE work... I may try installing to a USB memory stick; this possibility was mentioned in another thread. Thank for the suggestion, though. Much appreciated. hecker
A workaround would be to buy an IDE controller (for PCI). They are not expensive. Another way would be to install your system on an external HDD first and then clone that over to your PC's HDD. hecker Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/63108-solved-no-hdd-detected-latest-uphuck-with-gigabyte-p965-ds3/#findComment-446910 Share on other sites
Headcell
I tried again, but this time ignored the instruction to connect the SATA HDD to the purple ports. When connected to the Orange ports, OSX installed without a hitch. If only it would boot now! (That's another problem altogether...) Thanks for the help. There is still much to learn but these forums are great.
